We start August 24th. I hope no one yells at me for bringing this up! This year I have a 4th grader, 3rd, and kindergarten. Everyone is in school this year! (I'm very suspicious that the youngest will be very much like the oldest... ADD inattentive - yikes!)

I am afraid to say this... we feel guilty until we hear you all are out of school in early May.
We start Sept. 7th... but go until June 13th. At least Michael does in the brick and mortar school.
I am supposed to start with the home school on Aug. 31. We will start out slow until we get Michael out of the house, and then jump in full steam ahead. (sorry, with the humidity, steam was a bad choice of words, but...)

AUGUST 8TH !!!!!! YIKES Camismom, my heart goes out to you Thanks! There is a district across the river (in Alabama) that starts this Monday! Trid, yes we do get out in May, the 19th to be exact, but I'd rather have it your way. That's the way it was here when I was growing up. These days these kids are getting robbed of a month of summer and although the schools are air-conditioned we do still have kids that have to walk to and from in the heat!!! And they're not allowed to wear shorts in the upper schools!

It can still be very hot in Michigan in August and September....and we have no air condioning in our public schools where we live. I felt so sorry for the kids the last 2 weeks of school because it was so hot.

I remember those days well. They air-conditioned the schools here the year after I graduated. It was rough those last couple months. I remember trying to hear the teacher over the big box fans in the windows. That was back when we could leave windows and doors open and still feel safe about it. I sometimes forget that there are places still without air. For the sake of all our kids I hope the heat lets up some very soon!

In Massachusetts, where I grew up, we always started the Wednesday AFTER Labor Day, had the week of Thanksgiving, between Christmas and New Years, Presidents' Week, and Easter Week off, and went to school till around the 20th of June. One year we had so many SNOW days, that we went to school on July 1st. And we didn't have A/C either. But we also didn't have any rule on NO SHORTS. It seldom was warm enough to wear them! I'll take snow days any time rather than this ugly heat wave... THINK SNOW

As far as old time school schedules...we also always started the day after Labor Day and we get out the first of June, usually around the 5th. We had two days at Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, a week of Spring Break, and a few misc. days here and there. Yet, we had three full months of summer. We spent the " Dog days" at home in our air condt'd homes or in a pool somewhere!

We register here August 2nd and the first day of school is on August 9th. My boys started marching band camp yesterday, so for them, summer is already over!
