My son is broke.
A few days ago he was asking me if I would help him financially with the costs of getting a cellular phone. I said I would. So today he showed me what he had got -- an expensive model that will take pictures and so on. He bought a two-year phone plan. I asked him if he would like me to help him with the costs of the phone and he said, "Oh, maybe later in the month if I run out of money." This is Nov. 8. I asked him, "How much do you have in your account?" He said,"I can check it online." Then a minute later he laughed and said, "Five dollars . . . do you want to help me?"
I don't think it's too funny. I've asked him to work out a weekly budget for what his costs are. He is living free right now with his girlfriend, but still has gas, car licensing, phone rental, food and incidental costs. He told me gas costs him about 70 dollars per week for his old gas hog. He is writing his grade 12 midterms this week, so I don't want to get him too upset. But, you know, with that boy, nothing has ever been easy. I've had 18 years of his issues, and sometimes I feel like running away. Now that he has moved out of home, he still visits me everyday at work, which is good in a way. It is a time of transition for him. But sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out.

We have all felt like running away Barry!!!70 bucks for gas...that is a lot of money!!! It seems like part of that would go for food.

Dumb question, but if he wants the "fancy" model, why don't you make him cover those costs and you can get him groceries.
The cell phone thing is a sticking point for me and Mike, I don't want one, but he wants me to get one "just in case". He's not backing down and neither am I, But why does Robin need one? Or does he just want one?
I guess that would be my sticking point as a parent, why get the extra gizmos if you don't have the money?

RE "why get the extra gizmos if you don't have the money?" Good question. It seems that not everyone thinks this way. Is Mke your husband or your son. I presume it is your husband, and Mikey is your son. I think that the "just in case" argument is a good one. What if you were at a parade and you got so drunk you couldn't find your way home? Your husband could phone you and ask you where you were?

Maybe you don't want to be accessble by a phone. Maybe that would compromise your freedom for skullduggery!

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner. Well, Mike has his phone, and I told him when he first got it, the first call I was going to make was the annoying WHATCHA DOING? at a very inopporitune moment. So I did and he just laughed cause he knew I would. The more information that I have, the more liable I am to devulge knowlege if I have it. The more ways to get in touch with me, the more ways I can't avoid people. Plain and simple. Why do you think we have caller id, answering machines, and all of that? It's harder to be avoided when you are bringing attention to yourself. Besides, I don't need another bill to pay.

If they needed to knwo what I was going they would sit at the end of the bar and keep their ears open and mouths shut Just kidding. All they gotta do is ask....I won't lie or nothing ;D See I was just out riding my broom ;D Besides I have already been to the emergency just in case and didn't have the cell phone, I'll manage and be stubborn

I have a cell phone. My land line doesn't even have a phone connected to the jack.
As for my parents' financing me...it's simple. I play by their rules (as far as they know) and they'll help me out. I do play mostly by their rules. However, Quicken and I do not get along. (Quicken's a program to balance your checkbook by)

Story time: 3 weeks ago Mike adn I took separate vehicles to the club. I ran the kids back in to mom's house so they could spend the night and go to sunday school in the morning. About 1/2 mile from our house coming into town the truck started jerking back and forth, so I kept it going at an even pace and limped it home. Wait it gets better..... At hte time our phone was disconnected, so I had to send the kids to my mom's house to tell her to call Mike out to the club to come pick me up. OK, here he comes with his I TOLD YOU SO Grin on his face. The last thing he said to me before I left the club? WANNA TAKE MY CELL PHONE JUST IN CASE NO I"LL BE FINE WITH OUT IT And I still don't want one
