You know I hated homework as a kid to, so it doesnt surprise me that I hate it as an adult!! LOL Sd DID her dang homework, turned it in on time etc... It comes home with a piece of paper stuck to it saying that an adult has to check the work (What the He!! do the teachers do anymore??) and sign the homework... Now come on, it was done, most of it correct (even I couldnt figure out 2 problems! LOL) do they really think MY sd was capable of doing it without my sitting right there? OMG! I am sooooo ticked off... I HATE HOMEWORK!! cat

Cat - when I was helping DS figure out his math homework (on the other post) - I had to look up on the internet the definition of a "factor" and some of the other math definitions. It has been soooo long - I couldn't remember to save my life - and I was mixing factors up with multiples!! Then I would explain them all by "divisable by" when I realized that they really haven't done division yet - they are doing multiplication! So I had to rephrase it all with "multiple of" and "factors of" which I guess may sound easy now but this rusty old mom had to regroup and go to math.com!!! It took me almost a year to figure out what they meant by do a math problem and write a sentence explaining how you go the answer. Silly me - I thought they meant write an actual sentence with words - whay they really meant was show your work and write a number sentence. Well why didn't they just say that - (DS was in 2nd grade at the time). So it didn't really matter much when good old mom helped out - we were inevitably doing it wrong for the entire school year!!
I also go into the homework thing with the mentality of - do your homework - if it is incorrect - that is okay. I try my hardest to make sure that the "quality" of work is there - but sometimes if he just gets it done then I am happy.
But I am certainly not going to "check" his work and have him redo it if it is incorrect. I thought homework was for practice and reiteration of what the kids are learning in school as well as an indicator of what the kids are understanding and what they might need more help in.
Call me crazy . . .

I pretened its a game to look in the dictionary but in truth I am often stomped....

Ditto to mom2tj, I dont remember my parent never checked my homework...... I have to do it all the time. I´am embarrassed to say that I do check it and get it to ds to redo if it´s not correct, mostly because I want him to learn that he can use some time for homework and do those properly rather than just "run" throught them and get them done wrong But...add me to " I HATE HOMEWORK"-club

You know I feel so stupid, and the dang teacher didnt put the right answer down (to the 2 I couldnt figure out), so I STILL dont know the answer for goodness sakes... It was a which vowel is in this pictures name... The picture was some sort of a tent looking thing, or grass house oh who knows what it was... But "e" wasnt one of the letter choices, so I dont have a clue what that picture was... I thought maybe igloo, but most of theother pictures were only one vowel words... The signing thing drives me nuts though, I mean seriously when a child gets that much right (only 2 wrong out of 3 pages of work) who the heck cares if a parent was right there? Or checked the work? And NO my parents definately did NOT sit down with me to do homework... cat

Cat.... do not feel alone. I have been a member of the I HATE HOMEWORK club for many, many years! In fact, I'm thinking of running for president! Many times over I have complained that homework should not be... once a kid gets home from school they should be able to play, not do more of what they've been doing all day! A kid needs time to be a kid for goodness sake! They get so much these days it makes it almost impossible to sign them up for extra curricular activities. I can't count the number of times Cami was up late finishing homework on the night she took tumbling, or Wednesday nights so she could make youth group at church. Another complaint of mine is how little the text books show nowadays in examples of certain problems. I may not remember how to do something when first asked but if I look over examples a while I can figure it out. Most of the time I can't even find an example to go by! With Cami, her Pre-Alg teacher has the kids stamp the homework to show it was done. They then go over it and she gives the correct answer. They get credit for doing it, but it's not graded. Well, sh**, a kid can just get a piece of paper and write down some random numbers and letters for answers and whose going to know? The kid with the stamp will see a paper that has "answers" and stamp that it was done. Then they can change their answers to the correct ones just in case the teacher decides to take it up. Meanwhile they hve never learned how to actually DO the problem! What a hoot!

Cat - was it a camp?
I am beginning to really detest my Russian book. It likes to make us do an exercise when we really haven't had an explanation of the grammar behind it.

UGH!!! I have always hated homework too ... but what I really hate MORE than that is the way that these days the kids have to "tune in" to the answer the teacher is looking for ... Your example Cat of the "vowel" they were looking for in the picture is a prime one!! ... I mean there IS no right or wrong is there? It is SIMPLY the way you LOOK at it ... which might not tally with the way that the teacher looked at it and therefore the answer can be totally different !! ... I find this annoying ... and also the way they "flower" up the question rather than just asking for an answer ... YIKES!! ... One thing I WILL warn those of you with younger kids about though is that once they get into high school you REALLY REALLY REALLY "lose the plot" .... we lose it in primary school but as the years go on it gets more and more "fuzzy" .... and I won't even begin to tell you about my crash course in ENGINEERING !!

;D I am not laughing AT you, but try HOME SCHOOLING! I have to know, teach it, grade it, and reteach it all! And there is no "time when they get home from school" because they ARE at school at home!
But seriously, this one might take the cake!
The second grade classroom teacher made me sign the homework each night... well my last name starts with a G. Maiden name was NOT a G, and it is the ONE letter I never could make properly. So, to sign my name, I make an oversized lower case cursive G for my name. The teacher sent me home a nasty-gram and a page of "practice sheets" to learn how to sign a "proper" cursive capital G! Like I am going to change my legal signature to please a low life second grade classroom teacher for the 9 months she insists on seeing my signature correct on a piece of my son's homework!
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
I fixed her! I BROKE my left wrist, and couldn't sign ANYTHING from February on. So who got the last laugh! ;D ;D ;D

OMG....can I join, too??? I'll be surprised if not all 800+ members of this site don't chime in on this. I HATE HOMEWORK, TOO. It's impossible to get ds9 in after school to even start it before he's played for awhile...and THEN it's not easy either. I think he hides from me or something. Just yesterday (Yes, Sunday) we were working on a mandatory project for the Science Fair. After he agonized and agonized over trying to write the journal portion in cursive, I decided to put a STOP to that nonsense. We talked it out and I set him up on WORD on the computer. Neatness is 10-15% of the grade, so I'd rather something be taken off than ALL of it taken off because it was illegible. Again, most of these teachers don't have ADHD children and have no clue. As it is, MY son's teacher DOES have one and it's so much easier for us to relate to each other. The mandatory project is not her idea, but that of the entire school system. I just wonder what they really expect from a 9-year-old? Besides that....my husband and I DON'T WANT TO DO HOMEWORK EVERYNIGHT. My parents, nor his, ever, ever, ever helped with homework. We were on our own....but then again, we didn't have ADHD. We are both college grads, but I imagine we'll be out of the loop real soon on math, especially. They're already using that math "sentence" stuff....how ridiculous! Until I looked it up in the text book, I too thought it was a sentence of "words"!! I hope we ALL make it through this!

Again, most of these teachers don't have ADHD children and have no clue. Cami has had two teachers in her school career that are parents of an ADHD child. Neither teacher EVER assigned homework.

I have to admit that I also type the boys reports if they need to be. Riley will write his story first on the computer then I will go over it--proofread it---then I will type the final draft. Levi will get a few main ideas down then I will help him with sentence structure then I type the final draft. The night goes by much easier if I do this for them. Homework in my house is usually a 3 hour battle. I am so tired after the day is over then to do the homework . And now Levi is starting to get harder assignments so I really see his add kick in and not his strattera---some nights are

Another post reminded me! Last year sd was starting adding 2 digit numbers... Dh thinking he was being helpfull showed sd how to line them up, one above the other and add from top to bottom... like 26 +10 We got a note from the teacher that was not how they wanted the kids to do it.... Well geeeee lets add ANOTHER step in the learning process, instead of showing kids the easier way to add.... cat
