Yeah, it's always noisy, kids always trying to go to their friends tables and all that, but I'm wondering something..... How long do your kids get to eat? And does the school go in order of grade- youngest to oldest? Last year they rearranged the schedules of the 4th-8th grades and now some of the bigger kids eat before the little ones. I mean, 6th grade eating before 2nd grade I know schedules get changed around but come on. There have been complaints made to the VP, and all she can say is that that's how the scheduling went. And the time? That's a hoot. I just had to take Mikey something to eat and the line was backed up to the door-about 20 yards. And the poor kids at the end of the line, by the time they get their lunch, they have to scarf it down because it's time for the kids to line up. I remember getting about a half hour to eat. Granted it is 25 minutes, there weren't nearly as many kids buying back then AND we had more time. Thanks for the time to listen to me vent-just irking me a little

We don't have a cafeteria so I can't comment on that. Actually I think it is a good thing. They is more time to eat, often the teacher will read a book during lunch, and one the things they can "earn" is a ticket allowing a friend from another class to come over for lunch. It is going to be quite the change next year when Alexander switches school and they actually HAVE one.
25 minutes seems ridiculous. By the time the actually get their lunch and sit down to eat it - time is up!!
I bet if you asked the older kids - they could last a little longer before going to lunch. I know that as I got older the later I preferred to eat . . .
Vent away.

WELL, I can't wait to hear everyone's answers on this one! My son has been in the principal's office TWO times in the last week because he hit a boy in the back while standing in the cafeteria line. WHY was he not standing beside the teacher then? I KNOW the boy and his family, so it wasn't a hard hit or any such thing. I KNOW it's inappropriate, but if he was standing beside an adult, it wouldn't have happened! The teacher TOLD me, "I saw him do it, but he didn't know I saw him!" SO, I know she was in the near area! Grrrrrr.

Sometimes you have to wonder - is the teacher setting DS up to fail? Is she gloating in the "trouble" he is getting into ? Okay - it is apparent that issues are present - isn't her JOB to figure out how to deal with them in the most beneficial way to both your son and herself? Doesn't she WANT him to succeed? She isn't even a teacher I have to deal with and I am terribley frustrated for you!!!!

My dd7 gets 40 minutes for lunch, and then if the kid finishes early enough, they get to go outside (weather permitting) to play.
The disgusting thing is that 2nd grade has lunch at 10:55!!! Like, um, isn't that more like breakfast time???
The only thing I can say is that she is hardly ever hungry in the early morning, so if she doesn't eat much breakfast, at least I'll know that she will be eating soon! The teacher requests that we send a snack for the afternoon, so it works out okay.

Mikey has ALWAYS gotten into trouble standing in lines ::)Fidgeting, moving, running in place ::)Even though I send him with his lunch, he still needs to buy Milk, so there's another line. I have gone through more lost thermos' than you can shake a stick at. OH LOOK< he just brought one home from 2 weeks ago :oCan you say TRASH CAN----it was nasty. I have no idea where it was, I had been through his desk and his locker ???I don't think I want to know where it was after all Strugglingagain, hang in there, tell your son to keep his hands in his pockets and ALL BODY parts to himself. That's what we keep telling Mikey, but of course you get the leaning and all that, but at least they aren't hitting and kicking. The teacher sounds just like Mikey's kindergaten teacher......waiting to yell at him again and again and again

At my dd's schools, it has always been youngest to oldest as to when they take lunch, and the amount of time they get is 25 minutes. I agree that the poor kids have little to no time to eat by the time they get thru the line and to the table. Last year for Cami's first year at middle school, her lunch period started at 10:50!! So, no I didn't worry about her skipping breakfast, but she was starved by the time she got home!

My child is in the third grade, he has 30 min., but it starts at 12:45!!!! They get a little snack if they bring it, but he's losing weight and this sure doesn't help much. High calorie snacks aren't allowed.

Struggling,
Do you mean that the school has a rule that you can't pack a high calorie snack???

Oh This strikes such a nerve with me!! They have to have a healthy lunch and snack... Well excuse me my sd needs to EAT!! I dont care what it is!! Then they punish her for GASP! eating on the bus, well how dare she... For petes sake anyone can look at sd and see she needs to eat! ARGH!
OH and if they want breakfast at the school (I feed sd at home usually), and they ride the bus, they get 15 lousy minutes? Give me a break! I tried driving her in, and well that didnt work well either, cant drop off my son till 7:30 am, school starts at 8:00am... Just not enough time, and of course our kids who NEED the food the most dawdle something serious dont they!
Rant over! Can ya tell I disagree with the school here??
