I know that it is normal for Concerta to cause a child's appetite to decrease, however, my son has NO appetite. Every meal is a nightmare. Even when his favorites are prepared. His normal response when meal time arrives is "I'm not hungry". Can anyone out there give me some ideas if they are going through the same thing and how to cope? My son is underweight and I am afraid of his development. I have also tried giving him a medication prescribed by his Dr. for eating disorders which didn't help.

Welcome aboard!
We combat appetite problems all the time with my sd8 also.... She is on adderall xr though not concerta... What we do is skip it on some weekends, and load sd up with food (dont do this without permission from dr, I dont know if it would work for concerta!)... Sd is also very underweight...
The other thing we have tried, is remeron it helped but not alot...
My suggestion would be to ask the dr, what he/she advises... Good luck

Rls Sorry to hear of your son´s struggle with eating. I know lack of apetite is very common with stim´s. What´s the dosage of your ds and how old is he? Mine has 18 mg Conserta only on schooldays, I´ve seen no difference on his apetite. But I know it´s very low dosage. Have you tried to give f.ex. breackfast just before med´s, tried some of those protein shake´s or something like that I know there are many of us struggling with this, I hope someone can give you good advice´s. Welcome btw

Thank ya'll for the advice! Yes, I do manage to get an "okay" breakfast down him before the meds, but after that...he is like an "air fern"...no need for food AT ALL! I will ask his Dr about the Remeron. I haven't heard of that one. Again, thanks.

Hi rls71929 ... how long has your son been on Concerta? ..
The reason I ask is that my son had very little appetite for probably about a year after starting Concerta ... and at one point got way toooo thin... However, with the passing of time his appetite has "come back" and is pretty much normal now despite Concerta ....

Hello, AnneM...my son has been on Concerta for about a year now...but, what you have said gives me some hope. I worry about his muscle growth and development. Also, it tends to be a nightmare when a mealtime arrives. WHen everyone else is eating, my son always always says...I'm not hungry. THank goodness for Macaroni and Cheese! He is going to LOOK like a noodle if this continues!!!

Hi rls ... i have another question ! ;D
Do you ever take your son off Concerta for a day or two (i.e. weekends maybe or holidays?) ... if so how is his appetite on those days?

AnneM...I have delayed giving it to him in the a.m., but, my son is the type that simply cannot go without it. He is unmanageable. He runs around and CAN NOT focus on ANYTHING!!! He gets into trouble, is disrespectful, even is so active he is dangerous to himself. (get the picture???) But, I think I know where you are going...and you are right. When the meds wear off, his appetite returns somewhat. But it is a catch 22. Can't go without the meds, and is tough at meal time with it. I hope it gets better...he is 8 and he wears a size 6/7Slim. I guess I will just be patient. (unless someone out there has any suggestions...) THanks all.

rls:
When my son was on Adderrall XR he had almost no appetite. What I did, before switching meds was I gave him Pedia Sure. I was giving it to him left and right. I would give him a huge, high calorie breakfast before giving him the adderrall xr and then the rest of the day I would give him pedia sure with whatever meal he was picking at. That helped to keep his weight loss from getting to severe. However, I did end up switching meds since he did still loose a lot of weight. He is now on concerta and eating me out of house and home....So... you might also consider switching meds. He may have no appetite on Concerta but have a better appetite on another stimulant. Each child reacts differently to the different stimulants.
Good Luck

Thank you Gabriel's Mom. I will mention it to his Dr. I will have to say that lately he has been eating healthy amounts right before he goes to bed. I guess the meds are wearing off about then. We will see. He gained 4 lbs this summer!! Yea!!!

Sorry I can't help much but know EXACTLY what you're going through..I've had the same problem for the 3 years my ds(11y/o, 58lbs) has been on Concerta. He doesn't like breakfast foods, he'd rather eat chicken nuggets or a bean burrito, or spaghettio's. He ate good over the summer (med break) but back to the same ole now that he's in his meds again . He doesn't lose weight, but takes FOREVER to gain it too. I tell him that if doesn't eat he'll get sick and he understands so he'll eat..but not much(a pb&j 1 slice of bread) I say feed him when you can, if he's hungry at night load him up w/food, I usually tell ds if your gonna eat do it now cuz you go to bed in 1/2 hour. My ds by no means acts malnutritioned. I gave up worring all the time about it. As long as your child getting something in him and there's no dramitic weight loss Don't worry to much. P.S if you figure this one out let me know

I was last month at a friend's house to stay whose boys are both on concerta. She would sit them down to breakfast which was always two poached eggs with wholewheat toast and a glass of milk. Give them the concerta and then they ate immediately, she said at least she felt she got a protein breakfast into them for the day and then she did not worry so much if they did not eat much lunch. They then had dinner around 7pm and they seemed to have their appetite back by then. Does he like milkshakes?? Try those protein shakes the bodybuilders take to gain weight, some of them are pretty tasty, lots of protein and nutrients plus calories.

MaybeI shouldn'tsay this but I guess I'm lucky. Rose eats everything that isn't nailed down. Ate 2 dinners last night. Had bar-b-qued pork and corn at 5:00 and then ate two fried chicken legs and an ear of corn at 7:30. On 45mg concerta every day

Sweety, does she have a high metabolism? My husband can sit and eat when the weather is cold, but when it is warm, forget it. Yea, and he stays the same weight for the most part ::)Wish I had his metabolism
