;)Dear Rosyred, Rose has ALWAYS had a high metabolism. I just thought it was the ADHD. Everyone else in the family that is ADHD eats like that too. I did till I hit 35. If I ate like that now, I would be as big as a barn. We are all the "running on an engine" type. I can't just sit. Even in the evening, watching the TV,(even on meds) I'm crocheting, sewing doing something. Too bad I don't use all the energy to clean house.! ;D ;D

This is an old thread but I'll throw our experience in with Concerta in also. For max focusing mine should be on 54mg but with that dosage it doesn't wear off at night so he never gets his appetite back and he's awake till about midnight staring at the clock. I prefer the 36mg - he's not so focused but he'll get hungry sometime before bedtime and will get to sleep around 10PM give or take a little. When on this medicine - I wouldn't push eating dinner with the family - the meds take their appetite away. My doc did suggest pushing a glass of carnation breakfast after school to boost calories.

From my perspective I have to agree with you amcfanny .. My (now almost 17 year old) son Sam always did best "generally" at 36 mg ... when we went to 54 (which we did for a while) it didn't suit him .. he was way tooooo quiet and his appetite was VERY affected...
We also found that 36 was our ideal dosage although as you say was not gaining the maximum focussing potential ... but you definitely DO have to weigh everything up, i.e. focus -vs- appetite -vs- sleep -vs- any other side effects etc...

(quote).. he was way tooooo quiet (/quote)
That's another big factor at 54mg. I hate seeing them so zombie like. I want to hear him talk and laugh.

I agree !! .. and that is why it is soooo important to get the dosage right for the individual child ... its a real balancing act ... for us we found 36 was right ... but for others they will find the same thing at 54 or 72 ... dosage is SUCH an individual thing ... and when talking about Concerta (as opposed to Strattera which IS height, weight related) I understand that weight, age, height etc. has nothing to do with the right dosage! ..
One thing though that I dooooo think has a lot to do with the right dosaging is the "tolerance" that kids get to Concerta or any stimulant after a while ... it does seem that the dosage needs increasing as the tolerance to it grows ... This is something that I (personally) believe that the parents of very young children should be wary of ..

Jared is also on 36 mgs of concerta and it does affect his appetite but he eats breakfast before and then again when he gets to school because the pill hasnt kicked in fully yet.. then he is kinda okay thru lunch if he has no appetite then he gets and after school snack since his pill wears off right around 3 and he is hungry for diner later. He is also only medicated at school and has weekends and summer for eating and growth spurts. I am not sure I would like him on any stronger dose.

I find it interesting and I have talked to different parents that a child that is just ADD maintains a lower dose of meds.while an ADHD person seems to need more.

I find it interesting and I have talked to different parents that a child that is just ADD maintains a lower dose of meds.while an ADHD person seems to need more. This is an interesting point - Sam is add (rather than adhd) and he DID stick at the same level of meds for many years .... without needing an increase.... However, my thoughts above were based on what I had heard from so many others ... but being honest these were generally from those with adhd children... So from where I am standing THIS does really makes some sense!! An interesting point Linda !!

Interesting indeed...I hope it is true. Mine is inattentive ADHD or ADD or whatever it's called. That would mean he would stay at the lower dose...I hope...for some time to come.
