I just found out that the school district my child is in is looking at having them return to school on July 30th! I mean these kids have a little more taken from their summer every year! Whatever happened to starting school the day after labor day? This is something that is voted on by faculty and parents aren't asked for a opinion, much less vote. When I was at Cami's school in December for a conferance, I heard some teachers talking about it. You see, with this new calendar starting them earlier, they will be able to estend a fall break they get from 2 days to 5, so the teachers are all for that because they want a whole week off. What they don't think about is the actual students they are paid to teach (typical though, as most teachers do only think of themselves these days and not the children's wants or needs). For us working parents, that is an extra three days we have to worry about finding someone to watch them while we work (not always an easy task). Plus, that is yet another couple weeks taken from the summer vacation, limiting us to just June and July for vacations. We live in mid-Ga where the summer heat and humidity can be unbearable and August is the hottest month. Busses aren't air conditioned so our children are coming home soaked from this hot ride, not to mention time spent at bus stops waiting for the bus, yet shorts aren't permitted in the middle and high schools. Finally, for those of us with ADHD children, this means a shorter break from homework/projects/schoolwork and the agony that comes with it. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! Anyway, they get out on May 21 this year and it's looking like they will go back July 30. They'll get a week in October for a fall break, 2 weeks in December for Christmas break, 2 days in February for winter break, 1 week in April for Spring, and get out again in May. What is the norm where you're from?

Wow that does stink! I know how hard it is to find daycare, during the school year!!
Off your topic but this summer I have the added pleasure (NOT) of trying to find a daycare to accept sd for only 2 months instead of the whole summer off... Sd's mom wants to have sd for a month!! GRRRR I know it is normal but most people want you to do the whole summer, and make you pay if the child isnt there... Anyway back on topic!! LOL
Here they didnt start school till September, a couple days off in november (no clue what for!), they had 2 weeks off christmas time, Not sure about spring break I will have to check it out when I get home the calendar is there... I think they go till early june here... That can always be extended by bad weather day cancellations here though...
My hubby says he jinxed the bad weather days, because his job says if school cancells, you can stay home without being penalized for it (new policy this year at his work)... so far they have not had to cancel school at all... LOL So he hasnt gotten an extra day off either...

Thats crazy August is a better part of the summer. If they just had to add them extra days why don't they just add them on to the end of May and finish the month out.
My kids go back in late August, get fall break for a week in October. 2 weeks Christmas, and a week in March. This is along with all thier days here and days there that they get off for different little holidays plus the teacher work days. I thought teaching our children was thier work. They get out for Summer in late May.

That is definatley not normal here in Wisonsin. Our school didn't start until after Labor Day. If you want a differnt start date then you have to have it approved by some state ed department. We have 2 days in November, 2 weeks in December, and 3 for spring break. They also have days here and there throughout the year for teacher conferences. One thing we do have is that on Monday mornings school does not start until 9 AM. This does not affect us yet, but it will next year. They teachers have 1 hr of in-service every Monday morning. That is the best time to have it, At least it gives the kids a chance to ease back into the week.
I would be mad it if I was you too. In WI, if the kids got out in mid-May it probably will still be too cold for shorts. As far as daycare goes, I hit the jackpot. There is one here who will take kids on a weekly, daily, or hourly basis, there is not minumim number of hours you have to pay for. It's only $25 registration for a year, and as long as I give one week's notice they guarentee a spot, if not they try their best. This is the best part, they can be there for up to 10 hours if need be, and the maximum cost is $21 per day. This is working out great for me with DD2. Since I stay home the only time I need a sitter is when Honey has a doc appt, b/c I am not brave enough, nor do I have the patience, to take a 2 and a 4 yo to any office of anykind. I have no desire to punish myself!!!

Madison, like I said MOST teachers only think of themselves nowadays. Cat, I understand completely your dilemma with the childcare. Here the daycares require you to pay a pretty mean "registration" fee, and it's just a pain to do so when she'll only be there the two months, and next year you have to do it all over. And yes, it is hard to find daycare during the actual school year. We live in the country in a rural area and my child goes to Harris County schools. This is right outside the big city of Columbus where I work for Muscogee County Schools. There are no daycare where I live, so naturally she has to come to a Columbus daycare which goes by the Muscogee County calendar. She is twelve and stays by herself sometimes an hour or two at a time but no more, she doesn't feel comfortable yet to do as whole day, nor do I feel comfortable yet leaving her for a whole day. Oh, how I wish for a lottery win or some huge promotion for my husband, anything, to allow me to quit work!! But I know, I know, quit dreaming!! Speaking of work, back to it, and reality! ;D

Camismom, I'll make you a deal, I'll work at your job a few days a week and you can take care of our kids? Sounds good to me, what I wouldn't give to get out of the house more. I just can't do it b/c I have to really watch my daycare days b/c Honey has a way of getting asked not to come back to them. And I cannot work fulltime b/c I am running either one kid or the other to the doctor at least one time a week. There are not weekends or times after 4 PM here that the offices are open. I am stuck in the trap, either work and pay all of my earnings to daycare or stay home and turn grey early.

We're in CT and we start the last week of August. Have the normal holidays in Oct. & Nov. - (columbus day, veterans day, thanksgiving, etc.), this year it was 8 days off at Christmas/New Years (not counting weekends), we get a week off in Feb and a week of in April. We get out mid June. (Later if there are too many snow days).
July 30th seems way too early!

We're in Central CA, and school starts the last week of August and gets out the first week of June. This year the kids got a week at Thanksgiving and two at Christmas. It's also unbearably hot here in August, on top of that we have unhealthy air so the kids don't get to play outside (no recess or PE) if a Spare the Air day is called.
The only schools around here that have a schedule like yours are year round schools.

Honeysmom,
I can certainly understand you're desire to get out of the house more, but I would hope you could understand my desire to be at home. At least then when my child needs me, I could be there. When she has a field trip and begs me to be a chaperone, she doesn't have to hear, "I have to work, sorry." When she questions why so many of her friend's moms come and eat lunch with them, or volunteer at her school and I don't, she has to hear, "because I have to work." When she is having problems at school, I have to sit at work and worry how things are oing because I don't have the advantage of being able to pop in and check because while she's at school, I'm at work. When she is sick, I have to worry about calling out, when she has a doctor's appnt. I have to worry about getting off work. We've had people in this dept fired for being out too much, so it is a legitimate worry. If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't have to put her on a bus at 7:00 a.m. in the pitchblack dark where she has to deal with several students on the bus that are constantly harrassing her with their reverse prejudice, and worry about her getting to school safely with the idiot bus driver she has. I could also pick her up in the afternoon at 3:20 when she gets out of school and again, she wouldn't have to ride that same bus home and I would be there to help her with her homework and get an earlier start. Your way, you are at least there when your kids need and want you. Either way we have stress. By the way, I turn 35 in March and already have grey hairs, you are not alone...

Camismom, I totally understand your feelings too. I worked full time when my kids were infants and I cannot imagine doing it now. In all honesty, I have not idea how you do it. I think many of us are stuck in the same struggle of working or staying home, there is guilt no matter what you choose. I know my family could really use the extra income, but then we lose Honey's health insurance, and be worse off. Sometimes it feels like you just can't make the right decision. That is why I thought is would be nice if we shared. We could both have part of both worlds. Then again, we'd have to share the paycheck and that doesn't sound like fun. And I just turned 26, and I have been dying my hair since I was 17! It is sad when your grandma has less grey hair than you do I would never judge anyone for making a decision to work or stay home for any reason, I know everyone struggles with that. But it would be nice to go somewhere other than the doc's office. I live in the middle of no where and I have only left the house 1 time, for a doc appt, since January 1st!! I have no life anymore, I should work on that.

We typically start the Wednesday before Labor Day, 1/2 days. Then full swing in Sept. Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving & Black Friday. The day before Christmas through New Year's Day, MLK Day, President's Day, Good Friday and the Monday& Tuesday following, Memorial Day. Out on June 12. Snow days added after that. Teacher in-service days are every other Tuesday all year long, with the kids dismissed an hour early.
Growing up we always started the Wednesday AFTER Labor Day, had the regular days, plus 1/2 day before Thanksgiving and Christmas, all of President's week, and all of Easter Week, plus Patriot's Day, Bunker Hill Day... and we would get out mid June... except the year we got 12 1/2 feet of snow and our district had to go through July 1st to make up all the 17 snow days!
Never went to school in August, ever *except summer school which I did for grade acceleration, not remediation. (always have been defensive about that, NO I did not HAVE to go to summer school.
