Christy, this is so hard to estimate, since I dont really know how much building cost´s in U.S, I bet it´s quite the same as in here(it´s pretty pricey ) I think it depend´s on: Do you have to move wall´s?? and fírst, make sure those are wall´s you can actually move without braking the hole house Other than really expanding it hugely, I dont think it´s gonna cost you too much.... if I would have to renovate our bathroom it would be around 1500-2000€(our bathroom is 3x4 m)

It would involve knocking out the back wall of the bathroom (adjacent to the back of the house) and expanding it further into the backyard. We would probably have about $6,000.00 left after paying off the truck and braces. I'll just have to find some folks to come out and give us some estimates. Can anyone give me advice on what to look for in a contractor?

Christy....go to Home Depot...Lowes...and ask someone there if they know someone who can do this for you and give you an estimate. They are usually small contractors and you will probably get a better price.

Chisty, you would probably have to take out a bit more money for the remodel. You are looking at a new foundation (unless you can put it on piers), a new roof, plumming, electrical, drywall and fixtures. Just materials would probably run around $3,000. Labor estimates are usually around 150% of material cost. Unless you can do some yourself or with the help of friends. Miles

I tried to go thru Lowe's for the ceramic tile we just put in the kitchen, foyer, and main bath and they referred me to people that were outrageous! LOL Go figure, huh? I called a couple contractors I saw under "home improvments" in the yellow pages...had to leave messages on machines at both places.

You are looking at a new foundation (unless you can put it on piers), a new roof, Miles Hadn't thought about those two things! I thought of the plumbing of course, and flooring (for the tile). We are on foundation, so yep, that would have to be expanded. My dad is a retired electrician and my bil is an electrician now..could probably get them to do that at a cheaper price and my ex, the floor installer, would probably lay the tile for me. Still, don't know....guess the only way to find out is wait for a call back and set an appointment for an estimate. Just unsure of what to look for in a contractor. Don't want to trust our house to just anybody!

ask for references If they are worththeir wieght, they would have no problem giving you the names of a few people. May be if the people are nice enough, you might be able to drop by and see the work. MAKE SURE TO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK the progress and all that. My in-laws had lost their house when a contractor too the money and ran :-*Don't be afrain to be a pest either, like I said before, they should understand Good luck

Your re-modeling project sounds "Wonderful". I would do anything to have a bigger bathroom. Our house was built in the 40s and when they made the bathroom it was built for a single sink (no counter) tub and toliet with bearly any standing room (only enough room to pull up your pants). We have slowly been fixing up the house and the bathroom is one of my dreams (next to bigger bedrooms) or better yet maybe I could win the lottery then I could have the house totally remodeled. (opps another dream). Anyways keep us posted how it goes maybe I can finally get my dh do start really thinking about doing our bathroom if I tell him how your progress goes~~~good luck

Christy GOOD LUCK !! .. I have to home in on what Marja said about the wall ... just MAKE SURE THAT ANY WALL YOU BREAK DOWN IS NOT A 'SUPPORTING' WALL ... and IF it is ... make sure that you put in an RSJ to support the house!! We nearly fell to pieces LITERALLY over this error .... DH was all ready to knock down the wall between our kitchen and dining room to make it into one BIG area ... along came bil and he said "NO !! NO !! Don't DO IT !" ... and he was right !! .. It was a supporting wall ... We then got the builders to come and estimate and of course an RSJ is around £2000 !! ... Quite a difference in price between knocking down a non-supporting wall and a supporting wall!! We still intend to do it ... but in "time" !! ;D GOOD LUCK !!

Call the BBB or look them up online. You can at least stay away from the bad folk that way. They may have a list of things to look for and ask the contractors. A good rule of thumb is to get at least 3 estimates.

WE are doing a two story addition onto our house here. The foundation, excavator was 15k alone , then the inspector was another 750.00 for his part. The house addition part is another 18K for the "shell only" and to finished it off total would be 30k for the "final" product. We found a really good builder here and he was the best and lowest in town. BUT then these are Alaskan rates where the shipping is higher too..
