We were living in NY during hurricane Hugo, and Andy went south to help out for several weeks. He was on unemployment at the time, so felt he could do that. I cant believe all the damage Katrina did. All those people. I am still in shock. I am still praying for them.

that must have been very frustrating when you had to just sit around after ivan. i was fortunate that we went right to work after andrew. you take care, girl! It really was frustrating. Some of the regular Red Cross volunteers said that this was typical; another said that he thought it was BETTER organized than other disasters he'd been to. I was put on an emergency response vehicle with another local, but then they decided only one of us could go so I got off. Then I went with a group to help decide how to set up a supply center the next day. I had to go to work the next day and couldn't come back to help. I heard that the people in the Superdome are being sent to Houston to stay in the Astrodome. (I don't know how that will affect the Astors games.) I also heard that our city is going to try to allow 1,000 people to stay here. That's pretty generous since we have our own housing shortage since Ivan. Amsmom, thank you for all your kinds words!

I heard that this was the WORST hurricane in America's history .. is that right?? I think one that hit Galveston (before they had warning systems and all) killed 6,000-12,000 people.

I just read in the paper this morning that the UIL for schools in texas has stated that the schools do not have to wait for transfer papers to allow students who come here for shelter to start school. They are even waiving the wait period and allowing them to start school sports, even if they only expect to be here for a few weeks. I understand that several have already started school somewhere east of Dallas.
