I hope everyone is safe. I was at Corpus Christi when hurricane Allen came through. There were metal mailboxes with concrete on the bottom still attached blowing down the road by my car. It made for great waves until the damaging wind got there.

It's really strange outside here. Columbus sits on the border of Alabama and Georgia so that's how far east we are of Katrina. Though we haven't received any rain bands from it yet, we are getting wind. It is blowing 19 mph and gusting up to 23 outside, yet the wind is HOT. If we are getting this this far away, imagine what it's like where the thing is sitting. Our weatherman said of course this hurricane will bring it tropical air and bring the humidity back up. Those people will be without power for quite some time and having to clean up in that heat. It's not going to be pleasant in LA and MS for a while. I feel so terrible for everyone involved!! Andy was supposed to be going to Hattiesburg, MS to put a billboard up the weekend after next. It'll be interesting to see if the pole is still standing after today.

How's it going today Denise? Any trouble? I saw that Katrina was headed to the Ohio Valley this morning. We had a nasty night here once we started getting bands from the hurricane. It didn't get that bad in my county but there were tornado warnings being issued left and right in surrounding counties. Katrina is going to be a big impact all over this country regardless of where she "strikes"...oil prices are already on the rise.

Wow. We lost power for almost 24 hours (half our city lost power), and when I got back, wow--the pictures of the devastation. Over 100 confirmed dead in the Gulf Port, and Biloxi, Mis. area. The Red Cross can't even get into New Orleans to help yet. If I didn't have a job, I would be there in a minute to help out. I almost joined Red Cross after Ivan but didn't for a couple of reasons. I just may do it yet.

i worked w/ the red cross after hurricane andrew and it was such a lift emotionally for me. i was single without any kids so i had the time to do it. it is an incredible feeling. it may not be so easy for you with 2 kids, but i think they will take any hours you can give. good luck honey, you are such a good person!!!! Mom's joking (I think) about sending me out there to help since I don't have a job or anything right now.

I'm really concerned about "Mom1." I didn't say anything at the time, but I wondered how a brick house would hold up against flooding. It will be a while before communication is up again, but I hope you hear from her soon, Amsmom.
A few days after Ivan hit, we got our power back sooner than anyone else. After I did what I could around our house I went to help at the Red Cross. Unfortunately, I did little but sit around all day. It is very difficult to organize relief efforts, especially when the people in charge are not locals. They have to find out where and what the greatest needs are first and whether they can reach the people. Someone said that floods are the worst disasters to help with, I think because the people are so hard to reach.

Someone said that floods are the worst disasters to help with, I think because the people are so hard to reach. yes, ive heard that too, and that definitely seems to be the problem here too. that must have been very frustrating when you had to just sit around after ivan. i was fortunate that we went right to work after andrew. you take care, girl!

Has anyone tallied yet how many organizations and or what countries are going to send volunteer to help....I know about the navel hospitals, red cross, salvation army, national guard..I think they said Houston is asking refugees to move down there....just curious as to who all the angels are helping those peole out and risking themselves....they deserve medals...from what I seen on the news at the folks it is so horrible...How on earth could they repair a broken levee that is flooding out of control?? Seems like they would be in danger just trying....
