I was thinking there was someone here that lives in that area but couldn't remember who. I hope she evacuates!!
We are just barely out of the hurricane warning area so I think we will get some strong TS force winds. But oh, those poor Louisiana/Mississippi people!

I forgot to mention that we are under a hurricane watch. My only concern is that we are breathing a sigh of relief right now, and if the storm suddenly shifts east, as sometimes happens, we will be scrambling to prepare.

Amsom, though I have to admit I had forgotten 1mom is in LA, I assure you my thoughts have been with those in the path of this storm! My jaw dropped when I saw this morning it had strengthened to a cat-5 storm! This thing isn't going to be anything but catastrophic for where-ever it hits! Then it will bring flooding and tornadoes into the already flood-weary LA, MS, and AL. Even though we are far east from where it will travel through inland, we are even on "storm" alert for the heavy rain bands expected from it. We have a forcast for heavy storms tomorrow "some may contain tornadoes." I don't say that for sympathy of even concern because I have no doubt we'll be fine here...the point is that they are forcasting that for us and we are FAR east of where this thing will be. Prayers are definitely being said for those that Katrina will hit. Skay, please, please, please keep watch on the weather and if this thing even looks like it's going to jog more easterly, get out of town and seek shelter. Amsmom, if possible, keep us posted on 1mom.

I also was shocked to see the storm on the news while I was at moms today...last I seen it (before it hit FL ) they were wandering if it would even become a hurricane..OMG it is huge! Prayers to all those in its path...they said on the news they were opening up a football field dome in new orleans so that people could take shelter. Oh my!

Yes, the Super Dome was supposed to be a special needs shelter, but many of the poor who couldn't even afford to leave town are going there too. We have no work or school here tomorrow. We could have gusts up to 100 mph, and as with all hurricanes, there's the threat of tornadoes. As I said before, though, it seems odd to be out of the path of the eye of the storm.

We still have power so far. I don't think there's any way that we will have 100 mph gusts. That's not in the forecast anymore.

They said the people are having to stay in the stands and off the field because of the leaks and fear of debris falling. People trying to sleep in those seats didn't look very comfortable.

They've had a levee break in New Orleans (Tennessee St., just east of the French Quarter, from the map on TWC), so it's going to flood at least 3-8 feet according to them.
They're saying on TWC that the damage to the Superdome was minor and only to the outer lining with a few "minor" leaks.
