???Man, history lesson for today If the mason dsixon line that divided the north and south would have gone all the way to the atlantic ocean, I would be in the south :oBut it stopped, let's see, I forget where........let me go check.......I'll be back with it so I don't loose this Alright, here there is a line that shows it runs the PA/Maryland border. It was originally a property disput. If you look at where the Delaware Bay Turns into the river, I am about 10-15 minutes east of that, falling right under the line if it proceded across. geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa041999.htm

Kaiti, great site! Thanks for the info... it will come in handy for Civil War Review next month when school starts!!!
You know, my mom and dad Both were born about 20 miles NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line, but I always thought of the grandparents as going " Down South"... but they lived in WEST Virginia, which by definition made them Yankees... West Virginia seceeded from the CSA and from Virginia to become part of the USA! North and South is really just a relative term... think about this... if you are standing at the north pole, whichever way you step you are heading South, but you could also be heading East or West! It is just a matter of perception!

i can understand why people keep their mouth shut in the south when they are from the north. sorry christy, but i didn't see much of the famous hospitality and i lived there for 10 years. some people were nice of course but as a whole, they still aren't too fond of us yankees. karen I have to agree with Karen in the above quote. We lived in Texas for 10 years and until we adopted the accent we were treated poorly by ALOT of people and called "yankees" like it was a dirty word. ok...I have to admit... I am starting to get offended by all this. I have tried hard not to jump on my soap box and will try hard here not to offend anyone myself because I do not believe y'all have been intentional in offending me, but I feel a strong need to defend here. I have lived in the south my entire life and though I am sorry to hear that some of you have had bad experiences here, the opposite can be said as well. I have been treated very rudely in the north when I have been a visitor there and had my supposed accent heard and I know several people that lived in the north for a while that were treated the same as you describe M/C except they were called a different name I won't print here. My dh's best friend just moved back to Georgia a couple months ago and he has quite a few stories he has told. It's like Linda said, there are rude people everywhere, and I believe prejudice lives everywhere too. We here are treated like bad people because of what our ancestors did. I'm sorry my ancestor did wrong but it wasn't ME. I can tell you some things and argue my point to death here but I do not want to offend so I won't get into it all. Let me just say my dd was a victim of prejudice last year...She was bullied due to being white, and her good friend A for "acting white." My dd was not alive during the civil war and had nothing to do with slavery. Anyway, I just want people to know that the stereotype y'all are giving is not right. Yes, there are places you may find this behavior, yes there are people you may encounter that will treat you poorly but I do not believe it to be 75%, but if so in places, there could be reasons behind it. Like you said M/C, alot of good people come from the south, and most of them are the ones trying their d**ndest to erase the line that divides us. Enough said.

A yooper is someone who lives in the upper pennisula of Michigan~~~on the North side of Mackinaw Bridge.
A troll is someone who lives in the lower pennisula of Michigan~~~on the South side of Mackinaw Bridge.
Go to this website-----http://www.ring.com/michigan.htm
scroll half way down and there is a section that says Michigander or Yooper~~take the quiz OR Yooper humor
I think it is very funny~~I can relate to both as I have family in the Detroit area and living in Northern Michigan and we have 40 acres in the upper pennisula close to the Wisconsin border

QUOTE>>>>>>I am not saying all the southern people were like that but probably a good 75 % of the ones we came across were very much like that. My mother is from the south and I know what southern hospitality is suppose to be. Alot of good people come from the south. But it seems times are changing and people dont look to traditions they used to when it comes to behavior..no matter where they live. I had family members who were brothers who happened to live on opposite sides of that war and they were both more or less drafted (whatever they called it back then)....go figure. A good replacement word for all of us would be "Americans". or "neighbor" would be nice too. I know when you call us yankees it is done with love ;D ;D ;D What makes this "family" so special...the lack of labeling. [/quote] AS I SAID alot of good people come from the south...WE ALL get offended... I know that not all people are like the stereotype but some are. I dont think I mentioned anyones personal family in particular other than mine as far as history...yep.. in fact when the time is right we will probably be back in Texas if Bobo has his way. MY family is from Arkansas...originally Oklahoma oringinally California...unless you go the other side that was direct from Germany. People are from everywhere and there ARE rude people EVERYWHERE...I was just explaining why the word Yankee is nasty and offensive slang. LIKE I SAID what makes this family so special is the LACK OF LABELING. This site is just like family to me .. I would like the line that divides the entire human race to dissappear but it begins at home where the cute hurtful names for each other begin. Now I am off my box... and have a wonderful day ya'll !

we don't label around our house unless someone ticks us off ;Dthen you can imagine the titles we come up with ;D ;D ;D I think that when people sterotype others that's almost worse than labeling. Well, it sorta is the same thing. Like was it Miles that thought of nypd blue when thinking of Jersey....or Joisey as they say up north ;Dit used to tick me off, but then again a friend told us that Jersey was one earth quake away from being it's own country. We laugh because there is a strip of land that connects Jersey to I think PA is the Upper west part of the state. Other than that, we are an island.....so when we are in traffic with all teh idiot drivers that think the speed limit should be 80mph....we can't wait to get back to the island ;D ;D ;D

I have to say, being from New England, where everybody is thought to be laid back and that "Bed and Breakfast" open reputation...
When I moved to the Phillie area 5 yrs ago, I was SHOCKED at how dang friendly people are! Back home, when I took my driving test, I knew friends had FAILED the test because they didn't pull out to the double yellow lines and block traffic while attempting to make a left turn out of a parking lot. Here, you get near the road coming out of a lot, and traffic comes to a screeching halt and people WAVE you out in front of them! HUH? Not in Massachusetts! I once sat for 20 minutes at a red light waiting for it to turn so I could make a RIGHT turn... only to find out I was at the wrong end of a one way street! Here, doesn't matter... someone will still stop and wave you out!
I have traveled from Maine to Georgia, to New Mexico to Wyoming... BY CAR... stopped at grocery stores, restaraunts, hotels, and camp grounds. I have met thousands of people all around the US, been to Canada and Mexico, in one horse towns and major downtown inner city slums, and have found that my home town is more nasty and condescending than anywhere else! I love my town... I grew up in Norman Rockwell's neighborhood and remember him as a child... (I was the kid and he was old!)... sipping a root beer float at the JJ Newberry's on North St.
My grandaddy, from West Virginia put it best... no matter where you go, there will be good and bad people and he always tells me it is my responsibility to look for the decent people and don't bother with any of the trash, but don't treat them like trash just because they treated me that way.
I guess what I learned from him is, it truly doesn't matter who your parents were, where they came from or where you are from, it is WHO YOU ARE, and if you want to be liked, then treat all who cross your path with your true heart. (and while you are deciding who you want to be, make sure you get some of your grandma's magic behavior dust on you! ~ I always think, "would I act like this if Gram was with me?")

Hey you all american´s(wasn´t that how you prefer it M/C ) I dont care where you´re from and how you might sound, I just love you all and appresiate your opinion. No matter where you all, who your parent´s are, how much you make in a year, I know you are wonderfull, supportive person´s who do listen to me, laugh with me and support me, that´s all I need to know I like to speak/spend time with a person and find out what are they really like untill I ´ll make my judgment of them as human being´s... some I like, some I dont but I dont judge them for their colour, accent, income... what ever.
