when your Dentist did all the work on your teeth? I just had my 6 month check up and I thought all was well. I knew I had to have another crown but not until next year when my insurance kicks back in! The Dentist took full head x rays and I went on my way thinking there were no more problems. Well my Dentist called me a few days later and said he had my xrays in front of him and he wanted me to see a root canal specialist. That didn't go over big with me since I am a chicken about going in to see ANY DENTIST.I have about used up my insurance this year with a crown and routine visits.I have heard the procedure is expensive and painful I will make an appointment but I am going to ask if it can wait until January....I have no pain whatsoever but I don't want to experience any either

My last filling was done by the assistant. the dentist came in to check her work at the end! GRRRR!
I probably have the record on the board for most root canals... 6 of them.
I can tell you in all honesty, that it isn't that bad. I would rather have another root canal done than have my teeth cleaned. The hygenists seem like possessed demons with sharp pointy tools and super long gouging finger nails.
The root canals are much easier, with good medication during the procedure and the gentle dentists do the work with their large fingers and short nails!
But, yes, they are fairly expensive. I have one tooth that is only crowned, Dr. Wonderful, my old dentist, said that he thought he could put off the canal work for a few years... but that was almost 10 yrs. already! Still feeling fine.
Don't sweat it. I am serious. I would much rather have a root canal than a cleaning.

Oh yes let's don't forget about the cleaning!!! Nothing like walking out of the office with your mouth throbbing!!
I am not afraid of the needle in my mouth either. :oBut let the Physician tell me I might need a shot....I run the other way ;D ;D ;D

As a paramedic, I always said, "Of course you don't like needles. I would worry if anyone ever said, Hey, I like needles, give me two!"

Laurie HEAR HEAR Laurie!! ... I am convinced that hygienists are "repressed bullies" .... no .. correction ... NOT that repressed.... just "bullies" !! ;D ;D ;D My hygienist ALWAYS ticks me off every time ... the last time I went to see him in June I said "You are NOT allowed to tell me off this time because I purchased and have been religiously using the electric toothbrush advertised as "Amazing" RIGHT HERE in your practice!" ... And he said : "Well ... if it makes you feel better psychologically then that's great!! ... " I could have killed him there and then!! BUTTTT ... have to admit that when he looked at my teeth I DIDN'T get the normal "Now .. HOW have I told you to brush them?" ... ;D Linda .. as for being referred to different people for different thing ... oh ~YES !! ... Everyone is becoming too "specialised" I think!!

my dentist still does fillings. but the hygentist does clean my teeth. i guess i must have a really good one because my teeth mainly just feel good when i'm done. that wasn't always the case and since i've started flossing more, the cleanings are much easier. as far as a root canal, i've had one with two crowns, one of them without a root canal. i ended up at a specialist with the root canal because the dentist couldn't get it numb enough to do the work. the specialist got it in one try. (different dentist than i have now, btw) so don't feel too bad about the specialist. like with surgery, you might do better with a guy who does it all the time instead of a guy who does it sometimes. but yes it is expensive. maybe you can spread them out or do one or two yet this year and then wait until next year for the rest. good luck. karen

I am going to try like heck to spread them out...my dentist is a "nervous nellie" so hopefully the specialist will say I can wait....yeah right ;D ;D ;D ;D

I can so totally relate to this Linda... I dont like dentist´s, well... I go to dentist only if I REALLY NEED TO, due to a broken filling or something as bad It doesn´t really hurt anymore, but I hate the idea of it... Abut root canal´s, both my sister and dh have had their share of it, they tell me ti´s not a big thing at all.... so I think you´ll get throught it. no doupt about the cost though... I bet it´ll get expencive...

;DAnd the kicker is that after you put thousands of dollars into your mouth...a few years later many people end up spending more for false teeth anyway. Like the doc told me teeth that have had work done are considered weak and sooner or later have to go anyway...I think that is how he justified all the work he had previously done on mine. ;D If dentists had to work for free..I bet they wouldn't feel so hasty about drilling on us.

I have to agree that I would rather have a root canal then a cleaning. I do love my hygentist thou~~she is the best. The root canals are expensive~~~ after I had one done and had a post and crown put in the crown fell out~~~finally got the tooth pulled and last week I had the procedure done so I could get my flipper (I believe Mothercat told me about it ). I get it next Monday YEA. It only cost me 120.00 compared to 850.00 to do 2 more rc and get a bridge (and that is after insurance). I could afford to get a couple of those instead of getting the bridge done. BTW the 2 teeth he wants to put the bridge on are perfect so why go thru all the trouble?? Oh I know why my dentist is a specializes in root canals ;D ;D ;D ;D

Got buy stock in Ambsol and rub your teeth instead of the RC , those suckers are spendy, up here they are 2k with Insurance I hate the cleaning, I always get some newbie who knicks my gums and I bleed for hours and then the throbbing hurt comes the rest of the night. I would rather go through natural child birth with NO drugs then see the dentist again.

:-[I haven't been to the dentists for a few years.....today I have to take Mikey. He's not to bad about it though.......thank heavens he isn't like me. But it's about 45 minutes away and I hate to drive on highways. So I'm more nervous about getting there than being there. My anxiety level is way up

Kaiti....Join the crowd! ;D ;D ;D I never had a problem taking Paul when he was younger...he never knew about the pain part of it. Even now he doesn't get apprehensive. He just had 4 wisdom teeth pulled and wasn't complaining.
