Anyone else watch the season premiere of this show the Wednesday night? It's a show detailing the lives of 7 troubled teens that were sent away to a wildnerness camp to work through their issues with specialized counselors. One of the kids is 14 and ADHD. Cami and I watched it and found it quite interesting as well as somewhat entertaining. abc.go.com/primetime/bratcamp/

We had this show in the UK last year ... but with out-of-control BRITISH teenagers rather than US teenagers ... but they WERE sent to a camp in the US ... so I think its the same thing ... and I found it very very interesting ... SOME of them were totally transformed ... SOME of them were not ... They ALL were scarily "out of control" when they arrived there though!! On arrival (on the UK show) one guy REFUSED point blank to take all his piercings out ... (ears, tongue etc.etc.) and everyone else went off to the wilderness leaving this guy STILL saying he would NOT remove his piercings for anyone or anything ... It took hours ... but eventually he gave in ...

I can't wait for the next episode!!!I hope these kids can be helped but I am reserving judgement. :oI felt really bad for a few of the parents that were interviewed.
There was a few kids that I would like to work with though. They didn't seem to have much guidance at home.

Anne, I remember that show. I caught part of one episode. This one girl decided to pour out her rations for food on the ground. As she was doing that others were telling her that wasn't the brightest idea. She was VERY HUNGRY for a couple of days. Linda, I agree, it seemed like these kids seemed like they did not have very many limits imposed on them from adults at an early age. Hard to say though. Is revolt a form of wanting more involvement, but not knowing the right way to ask for it? Or being too proud to ask for it? Miles

miles...kids want more involvement and shouldn't have to ask for it. It should be provided by the parents as a given.

Linda, I totally agree, we only get to see what the editors see fit for us to see. Wonder what the big picture is like for the parents and the kids. Miles

A friend of mine told me on The View the other day they had two of the kids and both said they were glad they're parents sent them. It helped.

Wanted to bring this topic back up again. Saw some of the marathon yesterday. It is just like Linda said, these kids did not have enough intervention from the parents. If things got too tough, the parents were there to bail them out. I think we are going to be doing some of those camp tactics at home. The more you do it, the easier it gets, the more praise that is earned. Nate will be practicing brushing his teeth tonight over and over and over. He seems to have a problem getting to the bathroom and once there, finds everything under the roof to play with. We'll see. Miles

Sadly "Brat"camp didn't help two of the campers. A friend of mind told me she heard about the arrest of Isiah so I looked for something on it and came across this article:
Two of ABC's 'Brat Camp' youths facing separate criminal charges
UPI News Service, 08/08/2005
Two of the youths featured on ABC's "Brat Camp" reality series are facing criminal charges for separate incidents.
ABC tracked the progress of nine troubled young people -- including Jada Chabot, 16, and Isaiah Alarcon, 17 -- as they spent 50 days at the SageWalk Wilderness Therapy Camp in Oregon. Filming ended in January and show is airing weekly on Wednesday night.
Although it does not reveal how the participants turned out after the program, at least two have been arrested in recent weeks, E! Online said Monday.
RELATED LINKS RealityTVWorld: Brat Camp SirLinksALot: Brat Camp More Television News A motorboat being piloted by Chabot in Massachusetts' Lake Pearl plowed into a family of seven last week. One of the victims remains hospitalized with broken ribs. Chabot faces several charges including negligent boating as a result of the accident.
Alarcon was arrested July 29 for painting racial slurs outside the home of a preschool teacher in Winton, Calif., E! said.
Now under house arrest at his mother's home, Alarcon has a hearing Tuesday to determine whether he will stand trial as an adult.
Jada doesn't surprise me... she is a spoiled, manipulative brat that out of all the episodes so far you can tell she wasn't benefiting and probably wouldn't. Isiah showed some hope though.
The death of Peter Jennings preempted last week's show...looking forward to it this week.

Oh !! Now those reports are SAD !! I haven't seen the US Brat Camp .... only the UK version I mentioned earlier ... but in BOTH it sounds like there were "successes" and there were "failures" ... BUT ... Its the "failures" that make sad reading !!

Jada really seems like a manipulative kid, and Isaiah didn't want to be helped or helpful. I think the other kids have shown some real growth and promise. I hope the others see what has happened to these two and determine not to allow their time in the wilderness to be waste.
Michael WANTS to go to brat camp... he thinks it would be fun because he is so outdoorsie already. It would be a month or two of doing the fun stuff. Military school is a reward for him too... so what do I have left for options?
