Hello all! I am a lady with hat and broom of a 6 yr old son who was just diagnosed with ADHD. He has begun treatment with a medication called Concerta and we are very excited to see if this will bring improvements in his schoolwork. He has had a VERY difficult time in Kindergarten and now in first grade, not being able to finish assignments, not being able to sit still, not being able to be quiet, just on and on and on. He gets so frustrated, he tries really hard, but he just keeps on getting these dicipline notes sent home each week. We are hoping that this treatment will be a blessing for him, he's such a WONDERFUL kid that I want his teachers to see just how great he is too!

Welcome bigmomma! I'm sure you will find the board very supportive and fun.
The "mom" thing has to do with a contest we have going on. Nothing you are doing. Hope to see you around.

Everything will become sane on the morning after!
Anyway, welcome to the forums!

Yes, it could be that Concerta is just what he needs. He sure sounds like ADHD. You did well to get him diagnosed at the age of 6. My own son was 10 when we got him diagnosed as ADHD "great deal / severe" and he REFUSED to take medication. So it has always been difficult with him.

Welcome to our site! The hat and broom thing is a competition we have going, we are comming up on our one year anniversary of the site... The EVIL moderators are playing tricks to see what and who can catch the most tricks on the board... At the end we will do something for the winner (yet to be determined what though!)... Its just for fun and at our anniversary game will be over... Besides I am sure all of us parents here have needed a hat and broom from time to time right?? LOL Got to fight for our kids...
On to your situation: concerta was our first medication try, this is not to say your situation will be the same, BUT it took us along time to figure out which medication would work with my sd (step daughter)...
I know the discipline reports (here they are called referrals), the first year of first grade (had to hold back) sd had 25 of them throughout the year! OH it was an awful year! And sometimes they were nice and would combine incidents on to one referral...
I really hope concerta works for your son, best of luck and we are here for you!! Although sometimes we are a bit insane, but insanity keeps the sanity sometimes... Does that make any sense!? LOL

RE "oh thank GOODNESS! I was really worried about my sanity!!! How funny! I even called my lady with hat and broom and told her what was going on, and she just laughed and laughed. What fun! "
I'm glad you took that well. We all have a lot of fun here, as parenting ADHD children (or being married to them) can be very stressful, and it is good to let off steam.
Has your school year been going very long? You should know with Concerta fairly quickly if it is working well for your son. There are other things to try, but that is a good one. I like to hear you say how wonderful he is. That is the thing to keep going!

We have been in school now for 4 weeks, and it has been awful on poor Kelby. His teacher is so frustrated with him, and it just breaks my heart when he says "I am trying my best, but my brains just won't let me be good!" He doesn't know how right he is! He just started on the concerta yesterday, and I might be getting over excited, but tonight we actually got through the homework without any fights or tears. That in itself was a miracle. His teacher is supposed to send home a note letting me know if she has seen any improvement tomorrow, and I just know I will be stalking the schoolbus tomorrow afternoon waiting to see what she has to say! He woke up in such a good mood this morning, and said to me "mom, I am so excited to have this new medicine to help me think better. I think today I am a brand new Kelby. The new Kelby still looks like the old Kelby though." and he gave me a hug and was out the door to the bus. It put tears in my eyes to have him say that, I just hope that it does the trick. He wants so bad to please everyone, and it makes him so proud when he can make an accomlishment. We have set one goal for him, and that is getting his work finished at school on time. We are going to work on that, and hopefully soon the discipline reports will stop.

Yes, with stimulants, you should know within a few days if they are helping or not. They help about 75% of the time, I believe. Your son sure sounds like a good candidate for them -- classic symptoms. Is that his picture beside your posts?

Hi Bigmomma Welcome to our family, hope you´ll have fun, get some answer´s and support, I sure have got all of those. Like Barry said, stimulant´s give the responce right away, so you´ll see in few day´s if it´s working or not. My ds is on conserta 18mg (on schooldays only) and we saw the same as you: homework battle was over That was a huge relief for us; 2 hour´s of crying, tossing thing´s, yelling... changed to:"mom, I´ll make my homework now " It´s still working(after ½y) but we need to addjust the dosage, he´s got so big now that 18mg is a little too small amount. Good luck for your med trial, keep us posted on how it goes. Go to look different sequence´s we have, this is a great place to be

Greetings! Ignore today's goodbyes as a result of that "nasty" game we are playing. You really are wanted here!
Be brave, and stick up for him. I have a high school ADHD kid, and I found that as he got older more teachers are aware of his diagnosis. I would make med. changes and not tell them about it. After a few weeks I would tell them I am thinking about making a change and did they think he was doing okay or was I right that a change was needed. That way the teachers weren't looking for him to screw up or expecting too much from him.
Just a thought to keep tucked away in your mind for the future.

Welcome home bigmomma, as you can see we like to have fun while we are pulling our hair out and hiding from the kids.
Well, my son is 7 and unmedicated. We go the natural route and have adjusted his eating habits with the Feingold Program. That in itself has done wonders. I can tell what he's eaten by how he gets, whether it's whiney, moody, violent, just about anything.
Look around and ask away. The education section has lots of good tips when it comes to school if you haven't been there yet. My son has a 504, which modifies his school work and disipline for him in school.
Take care and see ya around Kaiti
