I feel like such a horses butt :-[I got a new brand of fish oil, Mikey, Tara and I were taking them. Well, they seemed to be making Mikey very bouncy. Um, duh, didn't read the label at the store, we are half way through the bottle, and BOOM, it has VANILLIN in it I didn't think to read for anything, I saw the numbers and figured OK, numbers match to what I wanted. Thought I knew what I was doing. Just wanted to let you all know that just because it comes from the vitamin section doesn't mean it is fool proof from artificials. Sounds obvious, but remember to read the labels of EVERYTHING

I know what you mean. I bought salt last time at the store. They were out of Morton's so I just grabbed a container of whatever. Got home and discovered it contained DEXTROSE! Gotta read those labels -- no matter how long it takes to get through the grocery store.

Oh man, when getting down to the nitty gritty these days and the way companies label, it's a wonder we don't have to be rocket scientists to just feed our kids. Thanks for the glimmer Catatonic, I was waiting for you to shake you finger

You don't even want to get me started on this one, Kaiti. My kids call me a Food Nazi, so you can probably guess that I spend a lot of time complaining about this very subject!

I'm just starting to read labels - on food. (I have been buying the dye free meds this year.) I was surprised the other day when I glanced at the label on my sugar free blackberry jelly the other day and saw it had red dye 40 in it. Now do I put the jelly loaded with sugar on his sandwich or the jelly loaded with red dye 40.

Good cuz I did switch right away to the sugar stuff when I noticed that. Have to get some of that all fruit spread - that should be a bit better for the kids.

Help!!!! I'm a little confused here. is it just the foods with high frutose, and corn syrup, additives, and perservatives that I look out for or is it regular sugar too. What's good to give my son to drink besides milk and water. What about fresh fruit and vegetables, are they good for him too; or not?

If your kiddo is allergic to milk or sugar than you've got to stay away from that too. I've never noticed any bad reaction to sugar in my kid but I limit sugar cuz it's just empty calories and rots the teeth. My kid is allergic to milk so we can't have that. I do have juicy juice in the house - just cuz I can get it through WIC. I don't believe it has much nutritional value. We were drinking powder lemonade but I see it's loaded with yellow #5 dye. We checked out gatorade and it's loaded with dyes. Water is a good thing to drink...at least 8 glasses a day. It's a good thing my kiddo likes it.
Fruits and veggies are great...have to monitor for bad reactions. I'm allergic to tomatoes and so is my sister.

my mother just sent home some sugar free, caffeine free, salt free, "Orange Early Rise " Great Value drink made by Walmart with Jared. Ingredients are as follows...citric acid, tricalcium, phosphate, nat and art. flavors, maltodextrin, ascorbic acid, aspartame, gum arabic, acesulfame potassium, xantham gum, art. color, calcium silicate, magnesium oxide, yellow 5, yellow 5 lake, red 40, niacinamade, pyridoxine, hydrochloride, riboflavin, vit A palimate, vit E acitate.
What the H*ll is making Jared bounce off the walls when he drinks this s*it?
He talks non stop after having it...OMG..Bud hates it but he is drinking it as fast as possible so it will be GONE and his brother will be QUIET...Jared does better on ice tea with caffeine and SUGAR than this stuff. Mom read the label and thought she was doing me a favor.. if you know what is causing it please email me as I wont be on here for awhile to see it..

Hey Motrhercast, I'll e-mail you so you can see this, but I bet it is the yellow5 and/or the maltodextrin Plus when they say natural and artificial flavors, what ones do they mean? Bless you for reading the labels. It does get to be a pain sometimes, but I think that iswhy God let someone invent earplugs ;D

Heylove, I don't believe sugar in moderation is bad. It doesn't seem to cause any problems around here, and clinical researchers haven't been able to demonstrate adverse behavioral effects from moderate amounts of sugar.
Fresh fruits and veggies are entirely healthy. Some kids, though, will have trouble with high-salicylate fruits. These include tomatoes, all berries, apples, oranges, grapes and peaches. You can try keeping your son's consumption of these fruits low, or do an actual elimination diet, where you remove them completely for 7 - 10 days. Then pick one and feed him LOTS of it during the course of one day. See if his behavior changes. On the third day, test another one, etc. etc. When we did this we found that tomatoes are evil, oranges are even more evil, and the others cause slightly increased hyperactivity and oppositional behavior but can be tolerated in small amounts infrequently.
In terms of which additives to avoid...we religiously avoid all forms of corn syrup. Bad reactions seem pretty common with ADHD kids - tantrums is the big result of consuming corn syrup here. Artificial colors are another one to avoid, and artificial flavors. The anti-oxidant preservatives (BHA, BHT, TBHQ). Also artificial sweeteners, and aspartame in particular.
We also avoid the benzoate preservatives (like sodium benzoate) because they make my son whiny, quarrelsome and spazoid. If you plan to clean up your son's diet, be prepared to read lots of labels. I can email you corn syrup-free and additive-free shopping lists for several major grocery chains, if you let me know which stores are near you.

Mothercat, please forgive me for offering unsolicited advice, but GET RID OF THAT CRAP Aspartame is a terrible neurological toxin, reactions like rage and hyperactivity are common. Artificial colors are petroleum derivatives -- do you really want to drink gasoline's cousin?? Not to mention their link to hyperactivity (and in my son's case, migraine headaches). Maltodextrin is corn syrup, and a truly evil substance around here, known to cause severe tantrums, lots of whiny crying, and bed wetting. Your safest course would be to THROW IT AWAY!
