Hi all. My only son just turned 5 years old last week so I enrolled him into kindergarten when school was about to start in August thinking I was doing the right thing. The first week was ok but the second week was hell.....my cell phone constantly ringing with messages from the school to come down there to observe my son...For a whole week, I spent like 3-4 hours a day observing him because they told me that his behavior towards other kids was not good. Apparently he had choked, spit, kicked, and hit these kids at recess. He was also disrupting the class by getting under his desk, running around the class and talking with the other kids, disobeying the teacher by not doing what she asked him to do. Yes, I will tell you that when I observed him w/out him knowing I was there I didn't see him physically harm any other kid on the playground and I did see that he was trying to make an effort and listen to what the teacher was saying, but after he saw me there it was a different story.......his behavior seemed to get worse and I can't figure that out......I talked to his teacher after picking him up from school and I told her that I had a feeling he may be ADHD and was going to take him to get checked out once I got my insurance card from the new job I was going to be starting.......Needless to say, the behavior was getting worse and I could feel the pressure of being a parent trying to do what is best for my son and dealing with the school blatantly telling me "we don't want him here and he needs to go to pre-school". I agree that I should've sent him to pre-school but when you are financially strapped what are you to do? He was going to a small daycare where the lady only took care of 3 other kids and she would work with him on his ABC'S, numbers, and writing his name when I didn't have the time. Since then, I was determined for him to go to school and pray that I wouldn't get a call from the school. One day after dropping my son off at school, I paid a visit to the Principal unexpectedly and told her that I wanted him evaluated and that it was their responsibility to help me out to see what could cause the behavior issues.....the next comment that came out of this ladies mouth was "you are using us as a babysitter" which at that point really angered and frustrated me. I proceeded to tell her that I thought her comments were offensive and to remind her that my son and I have rights. I told her that I'm sure my child is not the only one who misbehaves and feel that he is labeled as a trouble maker. After that, I scheduled a meeting with her, the teacher, the vice principal to evaluate and give him the SST........during the meeting they told me my son knows A-G and 1-4 which is not true. I told them that he's very intelligent and smart and can completely tell me the ABC'S as well as count from 1-20. They brought him in for me to show them and the poor guy just froze......I thought some of the questions they asked me didn't really pertain to the reason why we were there like " Did I have a normal delivery?" "Was he sick alot?" etc........After being frustrated with all of this and then seeing the look on my son's face every morning before going to school I told them that I would withdraw him and send him to a pre-school because now I will be making enough money to send him........I then took him to the doctor where he was diagnosed w/ADHD and will be having his next appt. to determine what medication w/be good for him.
