Grrrr My son came home last weekend and said he hasn't had recess all week. This is a MUST for him. He needs the outlet. Seems he meets with the special services teacher during recess and they are spending much time organizing his bookbag so it doesn't take time at the end of the day. Hmmmm. Sounds like some teachers don't like to stay 5 mins past when school lets out, doesn't it? How can you organize the take-home materials if the day is only half over? I also received a form letter stating that my child was having difficulty being organized (yea, big surprise, he has ADHD!!). It begged for parents to help at home. Yea, like we don't? I said "no" to study group for him this year because it meets during recess and he is already seeing a tutor 2x/wk, with extra homework for her, too. Enough is enough! Yes, he could use the extra study time, but all he thinks about during study group is how he's missing out on recess!! WHY do schools do this to kids??? Kris

Schools will do this if YOU let them do it. It makes me mad too. kids NEED that running around.
The teacher can find some other time to help your son. I am sure the poor kid feels like he is being punished!!

You all know how I feel about teachers! He needs his recess, and if your school is anything like the ones here, he doesn't get enough running time as it is! When I was a kid, we had a 15 minute break at 10:30 and 55 minutes for lunch and recess. I think as a whole, we did better educationally in the days when we were given MORE recess. It helped us focus better in the time that we did have for class! As for organizing... some days I want to drag the teachers into my house and ask them " Do you honestly think that I can organize this kid? Look at MY life! I can't organize my BED while I am still in it! I don't think my kids have a snow ball chance of every getting organized with MY help. If it is so important to you... you best start TEACHING the skills, instead of just demanding them!" okay, off my Kris, all you can do is let him know that you love him, organized or not, and encourage him to "play their game" as long as it takes.

Here's my broom and hat Don't take any BS from the school. They know what they must do and try to avoid it sometimes >:(In the name of time crunching. You know your son....you need to get in there and let them know they need to do at school what needs to be done. What surprises me with Mikey is the fact that he can get stuff done and only take gentle prodding here and there, where it takes the school a lifetime to get it done. How big is his class?

Thanks for the support. I also spoke with another mom of ADHD kids at the school. It's not me...(sometimes I need a reality check). He is not the only one doing this - apparently, the special services teacher takes all the kids at recess to "organize." I think this is ridiculous. They are 10 y olds; organization doesn't happen overnight just cuz they entered 5th grade. I started getting pretty organized in my 30's!!
I am going to send an e-mail to the special services teacher and copy the regular teacher and the principal. I hate this using recess time for other things. This is his last year of recess anyway...
Get this...Taylor was home sick yesterday (so was dh, and I'm not feeling well today). His teacher saw Amy, my 2nd grader, and gave her Taylor's homework to take home. HELLO? If he's too sick to be in school, he's too sick to focus on homework! I didn't make him do it (more out of spite! LOL).

Sometimes I wonder what goes on these teacher's brains!!! Jacob was absent 1 day last year because he was sick The next day his teacher had him go to the library to make up the work he had missed!!! HELLO...What about the work he was supposed to do that day!!! I know for a fact the reason this teacher did this was to ANNOY me considering this boy is at the top of his class!! I told 's dad about it....and believe me it didn't happen again ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sometimes you just have to say hmmm... wonder what was going through thier mind at the time?? We told Nate that if he ever has to stay inside and miss something to tell us right away. Our thoughts are that he should experience everything, even if his participation is just watching. We can do the work at home, but he cannot get the group interaction at home. The incentive for him to remember is that he gets to tattle on the teacher. Otherwise it is like pulling teeth to get info out of him. Miles

Sometimes you just have to say hmmm... wonder what was going through thier mind at the time?? What they are going to do with that fat paycheck during the summer when they aren't having to EARN it by dealing with our disorganized kid? Sorry, but I'm right there with Trid when it comes to feelings on teachers!

When BUd was in 5th grade he got problably , maybe 3 recesses all year because he was "supposedly" disorganized and he ISNT my adhd child. I found out that the teacher in question thought ALL boys were disorganized. When JAred had her I put down my foot and said NO and that was that. She even admitted to me that she liked girls better because she understood them better. Maybe a one on one with the teacher in question is needed. Also when they send the work home that way they also tend to deduct the one day needed to do makeup from it that most schools allow so if you cll in sick for him be sure to tell them that he is too sick to do homework. Bud missed alot with asthma and got screwed alot because of getting zeros for that reason.

Michael was complaining just last week.
"Elementary school says they are getting you ready for middle school, the middle school says they get you ready for high school, and high school says they get you ready for college. You get to college and they're going to say they are getting you ready for the REAL world... and you hit the real world... which is full of elementary school teachers. DUH!"
He has a point!
When Shaun got hit by the car in 4th grade, I waited until he had 5 consectutive days back in school and then asked the teacher what we could do to catch him up on the 1 1/2 months of missing days (he missed one here, two there for dental appts and allergic reactions to pain meds, ect., but never more than 3 in a row). The teacher politely informed me that she had kept him during EVERY recess since the accident to make up his work. I got out my broom and smacked her across the nose, so to speak, about how he was supposed to be getting exercise per doctors orders, and how DARE she decide unilaterally what was best for my child!
It didn't take long for him to get outside THAT day! OR any other the rest of the year! Doctors orders should take priority...
Maybe the trick is to ask the school if they are prepared to administer meds according to prescription... once they agree to that, have the doctor write the presciption and demand the school follow the orders!

Actually, not too badly. The Learning Support teacher replied in writing that they couldn't do the organizing at the end of the day (she didn't state a reason, though, which pi**ed me off). She did say that this was only for the beginning of the year and that as the kids improve, they'll have to be in for only 5 mins. Taylor DID get recess all this week, less the few minutes to pack up his bag. I still don't understand how they can pack up the bookbags and check them midday ~ aren't they still using books and supplies?? I asked that when I responded.
She said it's a "trade-off" on the social/activity vs. organization. I told her I'd rather he have the former, as he gets depressed otherwise and that leads to more problems...
I still think this is ridiculous to have kids "organized" at age 10! I'd like to see some of these teachers' homes!! I see I'm not the only one with this peeve.
Oh! Taylor came home yesterday with a note that he didn't hand in his reading homework...I didn't do homework with him that night, so I'm not sure what it involved, but if it was the makeup work - then she's right! I didn't make him do it the night of the day he was out sick.
