Does anyone know if there is a class size law in Michigan? My daughter has 35 kids in her class this year. I know the teacher's contract has a limit of 28 kids per classroom. But is there a State of Federal law?

I am pretty sure that it is 32 kids and that is still wayyyy to many kids in a class.
The way they have down sized the schools make me sick. 189 teachers retired and only 89 were replaced....what the heck is that about?

The onlything I can think of that would limit the class size is the Fire Marshall's limit of how many persons can be in a room 35 kids :ois there an aide in the room? Last year Tara's class was 29, so was the other 4th grade :-*so they had an aide split time between the 2 rooms....which I wish they would have just gotten another....but budgets have to be considered Mikey went from 27 last year to 24 this year >:(But from what I read of the class list, it's not going to be too bad....I hope

When I think of the fact that our principal makes 95,000 a year then I wander about the poor teachers and the fact that they are not replacing the ones who leave.....for just a minute I actually feel sorry for some of them. Budgets and priorities ...it must be really hard to be in charge of it all. They havent mentioned cutting back on field trips and extras at our school yet...but some schools around here are talking about it to save money. I wander where it will all stop and settle. 35 kids per room seems like an awful lot..cant picture Jared sitting thru that.

WOW 35 huh? YIKES! You must be in a big city? I am in Michigan also, a pretty decent size town, and last year sd had 28 kids in her class... My sd is in special education most the day though, so it didnt affect her too much... As for searching laws, there is an advocacy based in michigan... It is called "cause" (citizens aliance to uphold special education) their web site is www.causeonline.org, they can maybe direct you in the right direction.... Also check out www.wrightslaw.com, this is federal level though, but worth a shot.... Good luck! cat

We have 32 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, and 8 high schools..we also have a school esp. for pregnant teens, a school esp. for the extreme behavior/disability kids, and a "Academic Success" center for kids that are two or more years behind. Anyway, we are ran by an elected school board. Our super makes well over a 100 grand per year as well as many of our other administrators.... yet they cut out all the teacher aides job and other clerical type jobs because they couldn't afford them anymore. Anyway, yep, it can get aggravating at times. Esp. for me because I'm the one that runs and prints contracts, payroll, etc. I unwillingly see the salaries of all employees.

Our school system has been receiving a special pilot grant from the State to show the impact of low student class sizes. So they are trying to keep them under 18 for K-1, 25 for 2-4. It makes a pretty big difference in the learning process from what I have seen. And Christy, they fired all of the special education aids a couple year back claiming they did not have the "proper" education. Tell me someone right out of tech school is going to have the same knowledge and relationship with kids of someone doing the job for 20 years...... Miles

Well, I found out there is no limit on the number of kids they can put in the class in Michigan. I also found out they are waiting to see how many of the kids that enrolled will show up. If they all show up, they will add a Teacher. If they don't the kids will be shifted around.

There are 32 kids in my sons 5th grade class. Its been like that for the last 2 years. They are too cheap to add a 3rd class. I called the county superintendent one time and he also said there was no limit to how many kids were in a class. I know when I worked day care I was only allowed to have 15 school aged kids if I was by myself, why shouldnt teachers have some kind of limit.

our small town has about 15 kids per class. There are only around 70 kids per grade. That is the one thing I love about small towns. Even Dans highschool classes which could have more than one grade do not go over 20.
