I rec'd a letter in the mail Saturday about an SST meeting that has been scheduled for Cami next Tuesday. It was basically informing me of said meeting in case I wanted to attend. Well, of course I do but I honestly don't know what I can offer this early on. We are barely into the third week so it's too early yet for me to know what, if anything, we need to add to her 504.
Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of that I want to do is stress to all the teachers that they keep me informed of any problems. I have my work phone, cell phone, and computer by me at all times when I'm at work so there should never be a problem reaching me. I am anxious to hear how she has been doing thus far with attention and completing her work since we made the change to Concerta over the summer.
What, other than asking them to quit assigning homework (lol - yeah right!) can I ask for that is REASONABLE for an 8th grader?

What, other than asking them to quit assigning homework (lol - yeah right!) can I ask for that is REASONABLE for an 8th grader? Ask for REASONABLE is exactly what you have to do! A child is supposed to BENEFIT from homework. I believe in "homework in moderation, for all". The homework needs to be meaningful for a student, not tedious or confusing. A big problem for me was that he would miss an assignment, and I wouldn't know about it until a week before grades closed, then suddenly I am bombarded by 4 teachers telling me he owes each of them 10 assignments in the next 4 days or he fails! NOT OK! Ask each teacher how long they expect the homework to take. If she is taking more time, then mods have to be made. Tell them that you will have her work, say 45 minutes, per class at home. But with her diagnosis, she cannot be expected to work longer! If they need an argument, ask them why THEY only get to teach for 45 minutes at a time!

Not that we are there yet, but I would think that a weekly or bi-weekly check sheet could be sent home with any missed assignments.......or they could e-mail you just in case they wouldn't make it to you via Cami.
And what Trid said "The homework needs to be meaningful for a student, not tedious or confusing."
There is nothing worse then trying to explain to a kid something you don't understand. Let's see with all of the kids last year at SACC, I bet we sent them to their class to get another book to help US understand what we were helping with. ???at least 2 or 3 times a week.
We were just lucky we were still at the school. And if the kids were lucky the teacher was still there so they could explain it again.

I like your comments Trid.. I will definitely remember them! Biggest trouble with Cami is the time SHE takes to do homework. Really it ISN"T that much, but for HER it is...and I know you know what I mean...hardest part is getting teachers to understand it. And with her having swim practice now every day.... homework is a bigger struggle! It sounds like she has a good bunch this year though... I mean this meeting is something THE SCHOOL set up, not me! This is absolutely a FIRST for us! Cami even told me Friday afternoon in route to Atlanta (she was doing a writing assignment at the time) that her LA teacher called her to her desk Friday during class. At first she wondered what she had done ...lol...but she said the teacher had just rec'd a copy of her 504 and wanted to let her know she had not known about it and Cami's writing difficulty before. She told Cami I know now though and I want to make it stand with you that from now on if I assign two paragraphs, you do one...if I assign two pages, you do one, etc. I couldn't believe my ears!! There is hope for teachers in my eyes afterall! ;D ;D ;D

Homework - the bane of my existence (never mind the kids'!). My poor dd, age 7, LD in reading, had twice the amount of homework as her 10 yo brother, because she had the regular math and science, PLUS the LD teacher's assignments. She had at least an hour each night and I thought that was WAY too much for a first-grader! I'm dreading this year. Also, she was always so tired after school because she was trying so hard to keep up during the school day. I'm a terrible Mom, cuz I wanted to tell her to forget the homework!
