This article amazed me:
It is possible to be gifted in language, but not in mathematical reasoning. It is possible to be gifted in mathmatics, but not in language. Creativity seems to play an important role in giftedness.
This list is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool. It is provided here for reference only. For further information on giftedness, see links below.
1) High reasoning ability. Outstanding problem solving abilities. Views problems from many viewpoints. Can understand concepts and abstract thinking easily.
2) Ask pointed questions. Wants to know the why and the how. Intense curiosity.
3) Many different interests but sometimes develops one or two interests with high intensity.
4) Shows superior abilities in written and/or spoken language. Has a large vocabulary.
5) Is an avid reader. Reads books above grade level.
6) Learns quickly. High ability to retain and recall information.
7) Ability to grasp mathematical concepts and reasoning.
8) High creative ability.
9) Perfectionism. Sets high standards for self and can be extremely self-critical.
10) Can work well independently. Long attention span, especially in areas where intellectually or creatively challenged.
11) Extremely observant. Shows openness to new ideas.
12) In children, desire to interact with adults or children older than themselves.
13) Derives satisfaction and pleasure from intellectual challenge.

Somewhere or another, I have a study that tells of the incidence of ADHD in gifted children. Me, I was in the G/T class while nearly failing 5th grade.

My kid is in the gifted class and has a hard time in school too with all the emphasis on creative writing...and it has to be a certain format. He has a terrible time completing that kind of stuff. Now if the emphasis was on science...school would be a breeze.

:)1,2,4,8 plus alot of others describe Rose. She's had an incredible vocabulary since she could talk.(ever known a just turned 5 year old to use the word "humiliated" correctly?) She is SO creative it's scary sometimes. She has so many interests we discuss the pro's and con's of different things when she comes home from school. (they all usually revolve around creating something. Except for gameboy)She would much rather be around older children and adults than younger children. She is truly amazing,(but then I'm her mom so I should think she's amazing!)

I am the president of the school district's Parents Association of Gifted Education. This list is so typical of our students, I have a much longer version that I would have to look up, but it compares smart kids to gifted kids. Almost all the differences are the things that we consider in diagnosising ADHD! But as Sweety's idea, "She is truly amazing,(but then I'm her mom so I should think she's amazing!)" I went to a conference for Gifted Parents a while back. The speaker asked how many people were there because we have gifted children. EVERYONE. She then told us that giftedness is genetic... our kids got it from at least one of their parents! So, that means that at least 1/2 of the parents on this board must be gifted also... from my experience, most of our gifted kids are either dual identified as ADHD and gifted, or were mis~diagnosed as ADHD before their giftedness was recognized! I think they are just too smart for the rest of the world to keep up with them! So the rest of the world puts a label on them to make themselves feel better (like the bully syndrome!)

My son Sam is definitely not "gifted" (or at least not that I know of!) ... and I also understand that "giftedness" is generally way more common amongst those with adHd than those with add ... he's a great kid ... but he just isn't gifted!! ;D
but he does meet 2,3, and 11 ... but to the rest I have to say "No!" ...

I guess both of my kids got my brains then. My oldest (non-add/adhd) got into the gifted class for next year, and while my youngest ADHD kid isnt in the classes, he is extremely creative and intelligent. He just has no common sense.

I am constantly being corrected on my language slang and grammer by my 8 year old. He is extremely good at recalling facts, reading, and visual things. If something does not work for him, he creates a way to accomplish something. He is always saying, hey dad, look at this. He will often look like he is not paying attention, but he feels like once he has heard it or practiced it once, he does not have to repeat it. He hates writing and math though. Miles

All of them beside 5,8,10 and 13 do fit just perfectly to my ds.... and even those 4 could fit but I think he´s just too adHd, young and boy to fit those ...yet....I hope...
I´am his mom and I think he´s so wonderfull, but honestly, he´s very gifted if only he could get all that wonderfull ability of his out there...

Marja... it doesn't surprise me to think that Sami is gifted in many areas... I already said it is hereditary... he obviously gets many of his talents from you. With time and understanding, he will find his own special way of showing the world of his greatness!

Dan can not write a complete sentence becasue his spelling and grammar are so bad when he writes. He speaks very well however, and at the beginning of 8th grade he tested at above 12th grade math level. His teacher this year wants him moved up to the next math class because he already knows all the work they are doing in algebra I this year (9th grade). She has 11th graders in her class that do not know as much as Dan. I hope they move him, I would hate for him to get bored in the one class he excells at.
