I dont know if these apply to other states, but I just found out some interesting things about suspensions and kids in special ed or with an IEP in Illinios. They also mentioned kids in speech and resource, but I am unclear on if this applys to the speech kids.
If your child is in either of these situations, they can only be suspended for a total of 10 days throughout the school year. If you are called to pick up your child due to behavior, that is considered 1 day. If the police are called and you are taken away, that is considered a day. If the kid is suspended from the bus and the parent chooses not to drive the kid to school, that is also considered a day even though it is the parents fault. If the school goes over those 10 days, they have to provide homeschooling, a tutor, etc.
I guess the only way to get around this is to expel the kid but they dont do that much with grade school kids. It would probably have to be a situation where the kid brings a major weapon to school.
So, when the kid is a chronic problem because of fighting and things like that, and they have met their 10 day limit, what do you do with them other than ISS?

We have co-ordinated youth, but I think that is very limited as to who can go. I think it is more for the kids that are close to being expelled or something like that.
