The kids finally got the results of their TAKS tests yesterday and both did very well. Dan scored the highest on the math out of his entire grade. HOWEVER, at the academic awards on friday when they give the award for highest score on the TAKS, he will not get one. Why? Because he had the reading problems read to him. He still did the work, worked harder than the others because he had to deal with a LD and ADD, and they (most of them) dont. But because of having part of the test read to him, he cant get any recognition for his hard work. All they did was read, he did not get any other help. I am soooooo mad right now, I just hope they can find something to give him credit for.

That's absolutely awful. How do you keep your kid motivated with this kind of treatment? Mine would be getting a big treat at home at least.

I quote this from my 12 y.o. Dyslexic Gifted son... IF it is in his IEP that he gets reading assistance, then he should be considered having taken the test according to the Federal rules under "Fair Appropriate Public Education". He took the test fairly, and should be recognized fairly. In his school when he had to deal with awards, etc. They recognized the top special services students... and the kids were VERY proud of themselves. It isn't so much a matter of being recognized as "different" just that they are recognized for EFFORT! But Patrick says that Dan should be recognized because he only took the test FAIRLY according to his IEP... and I assume the school wouldn't have allowed the reading assistance if it wasn't in his IEP. So, even if the district won't acknowledge the hard work, Dan and his friends and family WILL! GREAT JOB DAN!

I am going to the flower shop and having a gift basket of his favorite treats and a balloon sent to the house after school on friday, so at least he will get something. The teachers this year know how hard he is working, they tell me all the time, so I am hoping they will do something for him. What is really hard is that his sister is in 6th grade and will be getting awards at the same ceremony. I think only one, but he is worried that she will be called up several times because she is in the gifted program. He is getting something for being a peer mediator this year. He also only got 2 wrong on the reading test, but since it was the SDAA not the regular TAKS (it was very close to the TAKS though) again, he will not get recognized for it. When this happend in 6th grade his teacher gave him a WINNER blue ribbon pin. Well I guess I will find out what happens in 2 days.

I agree that he should get the award. If all they did was read the thing for him, but he did all the work, I dont see that it is fair that someone else get the prize just because they did the reading portion. I would take it up with the principal or superintendent.

Vickilyn~~~that is awful that the school won't give Dan an award. He passed that test fair~~~but the school don't think about that when they receive funding for these same test the kids take. If I were you I would send the basket of goodies to school the day of the assembly so that everyone will know what a good job he did!!
[glow=blue,2,300]GREAT JOB DAN!!!![/glow]

If he dosent get some kind of recognition for it, I will be stoping at the gift shop on my way back to work and ordering something for him. The ceremony is at 1:30 central time, so I should find out soon. Both kids dressed reall nice for the ceremony, however Amber wore a dress with spagetti straps, so she has to keep a small short sleeve jacket over it for the day. She still looks good. Dan looks great, his girlfriend should be impressed. They did change the way they give the awards. For the last 2 years they gave metal pins for high points etc. this year they are only getting 1 certificate each with all the awards they earned printed on it. He has also been hearing from his friends about how he got a good grade on the reading test because it was the SDAA and not TAKS, so it was real easy. He took the hardest SDAA test which is only a little easier than the regular TAKS, but they dont believe him when he tells them that. GRRRRRRRRR, kids are so mean sometimes. At least the teachers have been telling him how proud they are.

Well he got recognised for being a peer mediator, and a member of the UIL math team, but not for TAKS. He is p#$@ed. I stopped on the way home and ordered a snack basket with a balloon boquet to be delivered after 4:00 when we will be home. As I thought, Amber was recognised for class officer, UIL one act play, UIL ready writing, UIL number sense, and A-B honor roll. At least Dan got SOMETHING, but not the one he was proudest of. Well one more week of Jr High, maybe highschool will be better. This year was going great untill this happened. Something always has to ruin things for our kids.

Well he is in a much better mood today. He spent the weekend in Abilene with a friend and they had a bar-b-que, played miniture golf, and went bowling. He came home on sunday, and some of his other friends came over to go swimming. Today was the athletic awards, so he was recongnised for crosscountry, basketball, football, and track. We talked about the academic awards, and he is happy with the gift basket. He said he is out of jr high and in highschool now, so he does not want me starting anything that his sister will have to live with. She still has 2 more years of jr high. I did let the principal know that I was not happy about it, but did not cause a big stink. I also sent thank you notes to the teachers that went out of thier way this year to work with Dan and kept telling him how proud of him they were. I am not sending one to the principal.

... maybe highschool will be better. ( Middle school was awful for all of us... so bad for Michael that Patrick and Shaun decided to go for the home school setting instead of the public building. Patrick actually withstood 7 weeks of middle school before he QUIT! High school seemed to be destined to be just as awful... until the second WEEK. Michael thinks he owns that building now. He has more friends and confidence than I knew was possible. Grades still aren't his strong point, but at least HE LIKES TO GO TO SCHOOL! (although I am not sure he understands that he is supposed to learn and do work there!) Mid semester marks came in today...He has a 53 in English (should still pass for the year). A 67 in History (also a passing grade for the year). Algebra is a 75... finally looks like a good chance he'll pass that too! And Science is a 70... that brings his average up to barely passing... but he has a written lab report final and the kid has a written language LD. But, I believe in him. I am ordering the final supplies he needs for summer camp tonight! That way he will see that I believe he'll pass! Mom's faith is better than any award or grade, right?

He said he is out of jr high and in highschool now, so he does not want me starting anything that his sister will have to live with. That is some kid youi've got there! What an unselfish thing to do and say! I love it!!! The bio brother I have that I grew up with never did anything brotherly like that for me. Dan is just a gem! I hope he knows it!! Give him my congrats for all those sports awards! That is just AWESOME!!
