Dan had his meeting yesterday with the highschool guidance councler about what classes to take in highschool next year. He was told that if he takes resource english he would not be able to get into college and needs to pick a new career, because he would not be able to be an archetect. Is this true? I was told at his Jr high ARD meeting that resource english would not stop him from college, he is in honours math, and reg ed for all else. I realize he may need to go to a junior college for 2 years and then transfer which is fine. I work at a junior college and my kids get free tuition, so I wont turn down 2 years of free education anyway. First I have never liked this councelor anyway, I worked with him for one year before I got this job and thought he was a jerk then, now I really think so. Dont tell my son that he is not smart enough to go to college, I know he is. His IQ is very high average. His reading comprehension is above grade level, he just cant spell very well, or read very fast. I know lots of professional people who do not read as well as I do, and they have college degrees. (I dont) Can this keep him from his dream?

That's entirely BS, unless he's trying to go someplace hard to get into.
I think you should try talking to another counselor (or that one's supervisor).

Vickilyn, I agree Alla and other´s, that shouldn´t keep him from college. Sound´s like his councellor could be sibling of the one I had; she was terrible, told me this " you cant get here, here or here with your point´s " she practically laughed at my face when I told I want to get to college, I´ve had great time telling her that I got my higher college degree Talk to other councellor and work from there...

Well Dan has decided that he is not going to listen to this councelor. We only have one in jr high, and one in highschool. The big problem over the next few years is that I also think the principal is a jerk along with the councelor. So I guess I will spend the next 4 years kicking but at the school. Thankfully there are several excellent teachers there that I know will be a big help to him. He can still go back and talk to the jr high teacher who has been such a big help to him whenever he needs to. (jr high and Highschool are in the same building complex) He has talked of nothing but being an architect since he was in 2nd grade, and has never changed his mind, so I feel he will work hard to get there. I guess I just panicd when he was told to not count on going to college.

Just FYI - my dh is an architect. He took Vocational/Technical courses in high school cuz his folks didn't know any better and the counsellors were jerks. He attended community college for 2 yrs (at which he had to take both remedial English and Math), then transferred to a Technical Institute. He completed his 5-yr Bachelor's degree in architecture one semester behind. He had a better GPA than I (3.3+) So, don't let a counselor thwart his dreams!! BTW, our hs counselors consistently steered us wrong, and my mom never paid any attention to them. They said my sister couldn't get into St. Lawrence - she got in Early Decision. Said my bro couldn't get into Bethany College - he did, and then transferred to U of F. Told me to go to Moravian College - I went to Gettysburg College, found it too small (Moravian is half that size! ), and transferred to FSU. So, do what YOU think is best. Kris
