I have a sister in N Carolina..she called and told mom today that they have told her that where she lives they will no longer teach algebra and math in high school..only geometry and trig and up. All algebra has to be taught in grade schools there starting next school year. Does anyone know if other schools are doing that?

Where we live students can take Algebra 1 in 8th grade if they are good math students. This counts as a high school math class. If, however, math is not your strength they still offer pre-algebra or math 8. I honestly can't believe that a school would offer NO Algebra 1 in high school. Our high school offers freshman Algebra 1 college prep, or tech prep. Kids who have aready passed Algebra 1 as 8th graders take Geometry 1 college prep or honors/IB.

Thats why I am asking..I have never heard of this and wandered what was up.. seems awful strange to me .. here you get the pre algebra that counts toward high school too but they still teach math and algebra at the high school.

I do know that they are introducing higher math concepts at a much earlier age these days. I'm past the point of being much help to my 8th grader in Algebra 1 (math was never my strong suit!) As far as helping my junior in high school; forget it! He's doing math I've never been exposed to or even heard of!

They still do some algebra in the high schools here but I wish they didn't!! ... In my opinion it is one of the very most USELESS subjects ever in the "real world" .... for 99.9% of students it is NEVER used again or of any use to them as adults ... (Unless you want to be an algebra teacher I guess!! ;D) ... From an anti-algebra ex-student!! ... One of our comedians recently highlighted algebra saying "WHY is it still taught in schools? .... and HAVE YOU EVER used it since leaving school ? Have you ever MET anyone who has used it since leaving school and come to that DO YOU ACTUALLY "WANT" to meet someone who actually uses it??"

Anne... I have to agree with you, but then again I think about 95% of what they teach in schools these days are things they won't use again. ;D ;D ;D

Actually, algebra I did fine in. I still use it occasionally.
Now geometry, trig, and calc, those were wastes of my time.

Well, Dan came home yesterday with his registration for 9th grade, and he is taking Algebra I. He also has an Algebra Lab.
