Summit Academy is a charter school for children with ADHD. My son is l0 yrs. old and is going there this year. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there that is familiar with the school. They have a teacher and aide in each classroom size average 12-15 students per classroom. The only thing I don't like they teach two grades in one class. Like 4th and 5th, etc. No homework is ever given. My son was getting straight A's which isn't him. He was originally in class with kids younger than him. I felt he was doing third class work in 5th grade. I feel maybe he isn't getting the education level he should and might pull him out this coming school year. The problem is he loves the school and no hassles with public school teachers. I don't know what to do. Anyone out there have any experiences with Summit Academy located in Ohio. Thanks, Pam

You should call the counselor and ask questions. They will be able to tell you if the school is having the student take the same testing as the public schools and if the grade level curriculum is being maintained. These people work for you and your child not the opposite.

He's in a smaller class ratio situation, he probably has less stress, there is less stress at home due to no homework struggles.. and you are questioning that he is getting A's?? Well what work do you see? Can you go in and observe and see what work he is doing? I am interested in Summit acadamy please PM me which location you are at. I don't know.. if he is getting A's mabye you should just give him a If you are concerned go in and get answers. But don't underestimate the effect that the lowering of the stress levels has on these guys! Denise

:)There are several Summit Academys in Ohio. He is going to the one in Warren, Ohio. There is also one in Youngstown, Akron. I have sat in the classroom once and it was everything he was already taught in public school. In March they put him in an upper classroom since he was getting all A's. I feel it is very less stressful also for me because no homework to fight with him to do everynite. They say he is doing fifth grade work. But I don't see it. He also was never on an IEP in public school he didn't qualify. Now he went from 110 IQ to a 81 at this school. Which I don't understand.

Iq tests can vary depending on the day and the mood... but usually not that much! Also it may be two different tests that figure things differently.. That is odd.
hmmm.. Have you asked why the difference?

We also considered Summit Academy for my 12 year old son for next school year. I think we have decided to go with homeschooling through Ohio Virtual Academy or through the TRECA digital academy next year. Have you heard of Summit Academy trying to classify students as having more than one disability? Do they do camp outs with the Boy Scouts their also? It is such a big decision to remove him from the local school system, but in my heart I feel it is best for him.
