Just got Jareds report card.. I might add they were handed out BEFORE Easter break. He didn't give it to me because he got a D in English and knew he would be grounded. Just got off the phone from teachers conference and she says the D is because he did absolutely NO accelerated reader this time.. Do I ground him for the D or for not giving me the report card or should I just hang him up by the ears and forget it..its not like I need any more stress right now and grounding him will surley increase my stress more than it will hurt him..what if I make him read to his dad every night..think that is enough?? I reall dont know what would be the best thing for all of us..

I personally don't think grounding him would do any good whatsoever in these circumstances ... BUT I like the much more practical idea of having him read to his Dad ... This should improve his reading which is really the goal you are trying to achieve.... (But then again I am not and never have been a fan of grounding anyway ... IMHO it simply makes the kid angrier and the parent suffer ... and very little - if anything- is learned as a result ... ) However, that is just my own personal opinion on grounding!

Hehehe. At least he didn't do what my brother did one time. He intercepted the report cards from the mail (mine and his, because if only one of them showed up, parents would know what happened). He burned them, but was dumb enough not to burn the envelopes too. Mom found them. ;D

Okay - firstly, WHY did he get the D? What is accelerated reading? Is this something on top of the usual homework, etc. and was it too much for him? Did he just procrastinate? Is reading usually a problem for him? Maybe there's something else going on you should investigate.
As for grounding, I've started using it, but it's not very effective, IMHO. I'm open for other ideas. Also, what would grounding Jared really accomplish? I'm much more in favor of making him read, perhaps institute a library night so he can choose reading material he likes (ie, more likely to do it).
I've started checking out library books that I enjoyed as a kid, and so far, they're a big hit with my school-aged kids. I don't know if they like the books or just the fact that I read them and liked them at their age. It's fun to share, though!

Well seeing that I grounded him for losing his reading book and that accomplished nothing but turmoil..still have NO reading book..I am going with the reading to dad and just plain making him feel guilty. ( my feelings are hurt..just ask him ) What dad will tell him ..I dont know yet but I bet it will be a good lecture.. Accelerated reading is extra reading that used to be for fun in kindergarden then someone got the idea that they should take tests on the computer and now it is school wide (I assumed nation wide) . They have to have so many points for tests passed or their grade in English is dropped. I also found out the reason he isn't doing so well and we had already had a conference on this at the beiginning of the year. The size of book they let him read really matters..(especially with his focus probs) At the beginning of the year she let him pick the 700 pg Harry Potter book and he didn't finish it to take the test. I discussed this with her and she assured me she would monitor things to where he only picked appropriate books that we knew he stood a chance at finishing. He has the Harry Potter book again..( I would have known except they do most the reading at school.) NUTS! ;D ;D ;D Here we go again..I sometimes wonder about the teachers focus factors. ;D ;D ;D

We have AR at our school, but they dont do it for a grade. They get points based on the level of the book (harry potter is 15-18 points). They trade their points in for candy, pencils, shirts, etc. Might be different at the Jr high and High school levels though.

Jacob's second grade class does accelerated reading too...maybe 3 or 4 times a week. I have mixed feelings about it because if kids this young just don't feel like doing it it pulls their grade down. Just a thought here mothercat if you feel discipline is in order...how about extra chores My dh used to make our boys wash windows when they messed up ;D ;D My windows were always clean ;D ;D ;D ;D

Another vote for extra chores (I love the fact that your windows were always clean Linda!! ;D) ... extra reading ... extra ANYTHING really as long as it suits the purpose ... In my opinion the punishment should fit the crime (so to speak) ... so if Jared's grades have gone down in reading and he therefore didn't offer his report card ... then EXTRA READING is a good way forward!! ...

I left punishment up to dad... after he looked at the report card he went out and washed and waxed my car and said nothing to Jared. He stayed outside till ten o:clock. He still hasn't said anything about it. I just dont know. He is so strict usually ..and its not a full moon..I checked.
