:oThats what Dan told me this morning. I was floored. He has been getting such good grades and everything this year. I asked him what he meant, and he said he was going to fail intentionaly so he could stay in 8th grade because he loved it so much. I dont think he really would do that, but why cant he see that next year may be even better? They way he sounds now, its like this year is it, and its all down hill from here.

Some kids are nervous about high shool...Bud was but he hated the grade school sooo much that nothing coulda kept him there. He wont even step into the building now that he doesn't have to any more. He just loves high school now that he is there.

Last year at 8th grade graduation, Michael announced in front of the whole student body that he wished he could stay at the middle school. (He barely did get out of the building due to bad grades as it was). This year, he stays after at least 90 minutes EVERY day, and often goes back to the school in the evenings for additional events. Some days he just sits in an empty classroom with a few friends chatting, but he loves being in high school, even if he still HATES school!
Tell Dan that the friends he has will all be with him next year, but he can get away from Mr. Evil or Ms. Evil... his most heinous teacher!
He might not like high school any more than he liked elementary school, but at least he can hate in front of a new bunch of adults... all put in the building with the express purpose of being his enemy!
Then, he can put together a four year plan to torment them all in his own unique manner... that should inspire him to get out of middle school!
Good luck!

I don't think he means it. High School to him is pretty scary. He also knows he will be at the bottom of the "totem pole". Trid is right..just tell him his friends will be there with him. I remember Paul being apprehensive too....but he did well. You can also tell Dan that once he is in H.S. the teachers(hopefully" will treat him more as an adult

vickilyn.... I agree with the others ... this is a classic case of "being frightened of moving out of the comfort zone" ... and resisting change .... Sam has ALWAYS been cautious and wary of change ... but at the same time kind of 'excited' by it too ... it sounds like your ds is erring MORe towards the "caution of change" rather than the excitement !! ... I guess its time to try and build up the "excitement" side !! ... I would be really surprised if he REALLY intentionally failed ... I think normally their natural competitiveness kicks in during tests and everyone does their best ... I sure hope so !! ...

I know he is looking forward to the possiblility of playing varsity football and basketball next year, and he gets his driving permit in may, so he has a lot of good things comming up. He is going to be in advanced math, and I think it has him worried some. I just wish he would look forward to something instead of dreading it.

Vickilyn I have finally seen..and it took 30 yrs mind you....if it won't change by worrying, then don't do it.....worry that is. I have always been a worry wort, but but all of that amounted to was unneeded stress on me. Tell Dan that HS will be great, my biggest thrill? My aunt was only 3 yrs older than me, so I met all of her friends, which in turn helped me out....and see things from a better angle than that of a freshman. :-XKaiti
