Finally, an accurate assessment!

Grrr...

Michael, DS14, was dx'd ADHD in 3rd grade, in 4th grade he was started on Adderall. In 5th grade he was identified gifted. All A's and B's back then.

Then middle school, things started going down hill FAST! By 7th grade we had added Straterra, by 8th grade he was off all meds since he was getting physically ill (migraines).

I just got off the phone with the school psychologist who just finished the WISC-IV with him.

Verbal Comprehension is 138 (99th %ile)
Perceptual Reasoning 108 (70th %ile)
Working Memory 91 (27th %ile)
Processing Speed 70 (2nd %ile)

Acedemic testing shows post high school level in reading and math, but a writing level of 3rd grade (3.2)

YEAH! They finally have it through their own sources that he is NOT refusing to do rote learning... he cannot process it and doesn't have the working memory to file away rote stuff!

Now, I have it in writing that they cannot put him on academic suspension from ROTC because he is failing English! I am so relieved that what I have been saying all along is true. He isn't lazy. He IS applying himself. He just has short circuits when it comes to learning. He is very intelligent, he just doesn't have the right connectors to plug into learning!

Now, to see what we can do about educational placement...

I am going to request he gets taken out of the Gifted English class and probably the gifted Science class, since they both require a lot of writing... science reports are sucking the life out of the kid!

Math is his bright spot, and he does love to read, he just cannot take notes in classes because he cannot process the information quickly. Maybe having notes handed to him pre-canned by the teachers might help...

I have a lot of research to do, but I just want to share with the world, that I am not crazy... I really do know my son better than anyone else.

When you discover the magic key, let me know. The teachers don't help. Steven has been having major troubles and is in danger of failing I sent a message to his teacher asking for another meeting, and this is the response I got.

"STeven's grades are suffering becuase he does not do his work. He is more than capable of doing it, he chooses not to. He had 7 zeros in math, and Mr. V gave me the worksheets for Steven to do and he did not
do them. Mr. Luna pulls Steven furing advisory and works with him. Steven still does not turn in his work. Steven needs to accept responsibility for his work and turn it in."

Steven had done the math papers over Thanksgiving, but keeps forgetting to turn them in. The teacher won't remind him.

Hi,
My son has great verbal ability and poor processing speed. I recently purchased Brain Skills, which is a home version of the PACE (Processing and Cognitive Enhancement) program. They have a website if you are interested. It is a really fun program but requires a lot of time (about 6 hr. a week) and that's where we have run into motivation prob. But I have the distinct feeling this program would work for kids like ours. If you find a PACE provider in your area, they will usually test your kid for free to see if they can help (oh, well, who knows how legit this is, but my son's I think was correct, more or less, though we had psych-ed testing twice before that. Anyway thought I would remind all about PACE. Maybe I can get my kid motivated to try it again and report to you.

Lisle... I had never heard about PACE, so I am going to go do a search now.

Thanks for the idea. I just set up his IEP meeting for next week, so I am getting back into that thought process again after 2 weeks of winter break.
