Not so great grades for half way through the second marking period. The reason mostly being Brock not paying attention...... and...... going to fast..... and writing sloppy, all stuff that he has to learn to control. I talked to his teachers and they said he has a basic knowledge of what they are doing. If they call on him he'll know the answer. He's been tested and doesn't quallify for an IEP so there's not a lot I can do in that area. Basically it's all up to him and that darn MATURITY issue. I'ts not like we can make him focus and slow down to think about doing his work the right way. It's very frustrating, he had straight "C"'s on the first report card (which we were very happy with... the grading system they use his c's were b- or b's in the grading system I had in school). It happens every year... it's like the honeymoon is over and I'm done trying now.

Oh Brocksmom we need some fresh ideas on HOW to keep him focused. I know that feeling all too well. Mikey has a MAJOR immaturity issue. He's finally settling down........for a day or two, then forget it. Does he have a 504? Mikey's 504 specifically states that he has to have paper work stuff cut down. Sorry, when the kids what, say 4+8 is, I think it is suffice to say they can move on . That's just for Mikey though, not that way in every case. As soon as he knows something he wants to be on to the next thing. How old is Brock again, sorry I forget

Go for the 504...then you can have Brock do his tests verbally....or anything else you think might help him.
Don't give up on him..you have to be his advocate.

yep... get that 504... include in it to have the teacher or maybe a peer give him ques when needed to pay attention or get back on task. Also include in it that they not grade him for neatness. It's a known fact that ADHDrs have a hard time writing.

Other´s have better experience about 504, so if they say: go for it, then I think you should!! And I agree with Christy, he should not get any -point´s of sloppyness/neatness You´re doing great job as his mom, just keep doing that and he´ll be much better!!

You say that Brock needs to learn to control the things that cause his grades to fall. Get him a 504 - he CANT control much of it! In the 504, you can specify that he be tested orally, or cut down on the number of problems/questions given (ie, just enough to demonstrate mastery of the concept, which the teachers say he has). Why take points off for other things if the idea is to ensure he's understanding the material? Love all these new smileys! Look into the 504 - it isn't giving him preferential treatment, it's just leveling the playing field. BTW, I notice that my son's grades would have been higher in my day, too. These days an 80 is a "C," whereas for me it was a "B." I try not to look at the grades, but at the quality of the work. Kris

All you need to do is put it in writiing that you request one. It would be a extra blessing if the pyschologist would write a letter adding what (he/she) personally thinks would benefit your child. Go for it!

I'll find you the info, don't worry about feeling dumb, I have asked all of the stupid questions along the was But basically a 504 is a plan to help your child. Mikey has one. It basically puts into writing the modifications that are to be made for your child. Mikey's states to cut back on paperwork if it isn't necessary, like 50 problems instead of 100.....he goes to the school counselor if he has a disiplin problem instead of getting sent ot the principal to just sit there.....the immediate counseling helps better than sitting and forgetting what he did while he waits for the principal. Alright, found this site. A 504 is a constitutional thing that gives everyone the right to a free education--so you don't have to send to a special school and such. www.504idea.org/504overview.html
