I don't know whether to feel DD's report card was good or not. She received a lot of checks (meets expectations), a check minus in math and social studies, and a bunch of * (meaning making progress). I know she is having a hard time with math, writing, and the usual, social and work habits. It seems that last year she got mostly checks and check minuses. Close to the end of the year she had greatly improved and ended up with almost all checks. I just don't understand.
There was a note on the back of her report card saying "Briana has done a fine job this term. She continues to make progress both in her school work and in her behavior". There was another paper stuck in with her report card that was supposed to tell what grade level she is reading at. According to that she is in early development/beginning first grade level. But at the same time her reading comprehension, decoding, and overall progress were all checks.
I'm curious as to what other second graders levels are. Do any of you with second graders know what reading level you children are on? I'm also worried that this report card is a sign that she is going to be held back this year. I know it's only the beginning of the year, but I feel like she has is going backwards (if that makes sense).
What do you all think? I'm going to try to schedule a conference with her teacher soon.

aimee...call the teacher to get clarification...sometimes those report cards do not make a lot of sense!
Jacob is in second grade and he is reading 3rd grade level.A note came home concerning math and they are starting multiplying and long division!!!To me that is ridiculous!
All and all it does sound like Briana is doing fine....but to put your mind at ease call the teacher.

OMG--Linda your grandson is starting times and division?? Both of my boys didn't even learn their time facts until 6th grade (but they were introduced to them in 3rd grade) I would think at a 2nd grade level they would still be working on addition and subtraction--I can't believe how advanced the school sytems are becoming.

Today's kids seem to be one to two years ahead of where we were at their age. It is too much! That's why I tell Cami not to sweat the grades, just pass and I'm happy. ;D
Aimee, I'm with Linda. If it's confusing you, then make that phone call and set your mind at ease. I'm sure it's all fine.

Well, as far as Mikey's reading level goes, I have no clue, but he isn't doing too bad, as far as that goes.
BUT yes, yes, yes, call to the teacher is in order. ANYTIME you have a question ask. Be a pain, so what, that teacher's job is to teach and if it isn't understood, she/he needs to clarify.
I have noticed that some kids make the click.....meaning that all of the clues are there, but they need to put the puzzle together, and it will happen soon.

Don't get me started on the curriculum....many months ago I posted complaints about the level of complex material they're giving our very young kids. If multiplication and division in 3rd grade disturbs you, how about pre-algebra (variables, polynomials) in 4th grade? Sometimes it takes me a few minutes to figure out the answers to my son's 4th grade homework!! It is absolutely ridiculous. I truly feel that pushing these complex concepts too early accomplishes nothing because, even though ds can do the work, he doesn't have the frame of reference to apply it, KWIM? He's too young to understand WHY he needs to have this knowledge - to him, it's just busy work rather than skill building. And math is his best subject! Grrrrrrrrrr..................... Kris
