You guys were so awesome helping me through my eligibility meeting last week! Now I meet on Thursday to actually write the goals.
The learning specialist says that her IEP goals will be based around Reading Comprehension and Fluency, Written Expression and Organization. She will also work with the social worker on self-advocacy goals.
Brooke's ability came out solid average overall. She is not able to demonstrate that in the standard ways in the classroom. Fails majority of written tests with a high degree of impulsivity. Cannot thoroughly express ideas in writing. NEVER asks the teacher for help. Forgets to bring textbooks home. No extras available to keep at home. We are a private school so I don't know if that can be resolved.
Learning specialist has concerns over last weeks meeting that she will fully explain on Thursday. Hope she will be on board for this. Where do I start?

I would say the most important thing for you to do is to sit down and organize a list of needs that you feel are important for Brooke.. (both you and Brookes dad..) Then prioritize that list.
As far as accomodations.. CAn tests be taken orally, or can she be allowed to make a class presentation on a subject rather than the written test.
i am sure if you and the school scrounge and search you can come up with an extra set of books for home and school.. that would be an important one..
Also a homework/assignment system where they have to check off on it, and you have to as well.. Perhaps a print out list on Brookes desk with what she needs to put in her book bag.. laminated so the teacher can check it off with a dry erase marker during the day and Brooke can check that as she is getting ready to go.. ?? With the last item being show this to the teacher.. Yeah it will take a minute or two .. but it will be worth it..
Can she tape record story/sentence ideas and then play it back to copy it down.. that way she has already expresssed the ideas and then the writing is just transcribing..
Ok.. enough I will think of more I am sure!! Denise

Just an FYI. All went well at the goal writing. Brooke has 4 IEP goals. 3 related to Reading and Writing and 1 Social Work for Self-Advocacy. We had all accomodations met except extra textbooks because they do not have any extras. Instead they will make sure books come home as needed.
Learning specialist was cool with Brooke's placement. She had big issues with school district dragging their feet at the meeting when it should have been an easy decision. Anyway I am hoping that this is a turning point for Brooke and our family finally. Thanks for all of the support.

Chris, if you still want a set of books, find out the name of the text, the publisher, the edition and printing #, and see if you can find it on a homeschool text book trading web site. There are a few out there, and homeschoolers tend to treat the books fairly well. Your resale price next year will probably be enough that you don't lose any money for the investment.
Just a thought!
Good job getting the rest of the accomodations in place!
