Well even though I teach my kids at home they ARE enrolled in a public school.. the ohio virtual acadamy.. so yesterday during an about hour long call we did an initial form called a level 1 documentation of interventions form.. My son is not doing so hot on spelling,, and of course staying on task.. So we are splitting his spelling list in half and doing one half per week, and started a chart that the teacher sent for focus and getting work done in a timely manner. We are going to work on this for two weeks. then reconvene and see what we see.. I already sent her a bunch of the initial paperwork that was done by the regular school and the OT. So that along with this intervention form is being sent to the special ed coordinator.
So we will see what they come up with!

Denise, glad to hear they are working with you on this. If 2 weeks is too much, call back before the time is up. I don't need to tell you that you can do it at your own pace, but you CAN'T let him know that! Trust me... having a 12 y.o. has proven that time lines are a concept that they just don't understand by the teen years!
When you break the lists down, don't count out 10 words, break them at the sensible place. I assume that he is working on Spelling 2, Semester 1. The Spelling 3 is the first program Patrick EVER had that makes sense to me. To follow spelling rules that are clearly explained has made such a great change in his ability. But now he is getting more than one rule per list with 20 words per week. Even at his age, that can be WAY TOO MANY words at one time. I can't imagine having that long a list for an 8 y.o. without ADHD!
Let me know how things go!
The change of placement was such a great move for him, and it is MUCH easier than they might lead you to believe. I spoke directly with a girl at the K12 headquarters. A change of placement for a class or grade can be processed in 1 HOUR, yes ONE HOUR. I was shocked to find out that if the request is made, OLS will reflect the change that quickly. Red tape is the hold up. Once the change went through, we got our new supplies inside a week.
We are still planning on the pen pal program... but we have been dealing with OT, PT, orthodontic, dental, and ear infection issues, as well as HIGH SCHOOL for Michael. Time is non existent... we will get in gear soon!

Am I stepping on the toes of moms or virtual schools, but I specifically remember being taught that if there is an E at the end of a word the vowel sound is long for the directly proceeding vowel. ;D Sorry, been having trouble telling the SACC kids that don't know the basics that I was taught. Can't I open m,y own school :oYou guys can come ;D God that's scary

Eh.. yes.. but when your kid can't remember which word is spelled with said E at the end.. then it is a problem.. of course he has no problem reading it... but hey that is what spell checker is for isn't it?
