What does it mean when the teacher emails me saying, "I've been working on a "referral packet" for your son. This is the first step toward an IEP."? I don't know WHAT it is that she's in the process of. I thought it was the PARENTS who requested an IEP? I'm about to step into the middle of this school and you're going to hear the explosion from CA to NY! I scheduled a meeting with the prinicpal for tomorrow morning....after I've already met with the teacher AND the assistant principal and got absolutely NOwhere!

From my understanding a referal packet is all of the information that is needed on her end to prove that the IEP/504 is necessary, at least that's what it is at our school.
Correct me if I am wrong anyone.

I would just LOVE to correct you kaiti! Unfortunately I dont have a clue what the teacher is talking about though... Is it maybe some testing they did on your son? I wish I knew! Please let us know when you find out, so if this comes up again we have a clue to pass along... cat

SURELY, the school didn't do any testing on my son without our knowledge? ?? The appt. with the principal has been, once again, rescheduled and now the meeting is Monday. We've been trying to get there since Wed. ARG! Before I agree to putting him in any kind of LD classes, I want more testing done than I've already had. Less than a year ago we had a child psychologist test him extensively. There is only a "possiblity" of learning disabilities, due to the wide range of his scores on Verbal and Performance testing. I think the biggest concern was the span was 24 points, which he said is rather UNcommon. Overall IQ was 101. I thought that was average. This gives me a headache!!!!!!!

I don't kow the legalities of it, but they tested Mikey for Occupational therapy without my knowlege >:(The only reason I wasn't miffed is because the specialist usually test kids if there is a concern. If the specialist sees a problem, THEN it is brought ot the attention of the parents, unless the parents bring it up first, which is what I did for speech therapy. But not the OT. It's going to be a little confusing if you don't understand some wordings, so if you have any questions, post away. ps. If there is EVER anything that you don't understand, DO NOT sign anything until you have everybit of information explained to your understanding. Ask away, look like a kid when they get going with the WHY'S, WHY'S WHY'S. You might seem like your bugging, but tough, it is your son they are educating Good luck.

Possibly it's just a packet that shows examples of his work? I know the teachers have to have that for any problems that show up.
Don't be afraid of Special Ed. Steven is in streamlined special education and it has been a Godsend! He just has a teacher that helps him in areas, like organizing his projects, where he has projects. This usually happens in study hall. He is in normal classes the rest of the day, with honors math even.

You also have the right to take anyone you want to a IEPor for a 504 meeting.
Kaiti is right...don't sign anything you don't understand.
