Are you ready for this one? I just plain don't know what to think. Yesterday my 8-year-old son brought home a form suggesting he needed tutoring. I have no idea WHAT class(s) she's speaking of, or who would do this tutoring except it said "volunteers". I called the school and only found out that it's usually TEENAGERS who volunteer to do tutoring. TEENAGERS??? And the school thinks a TEENAGER could handle my son and his problems? This has to be a joke. So far today, I felt like I needed to calm down or I was going to be a screaming lunatic and as you all know, that's no way to handle the school. I have called and left a message for his teacher to call me. What I really think is that she's tired of fooling with him and wants to pass him onto someone else. Am I being too sensitive here?

Im sort of wishy washy on this one... We have a neighbor girl who is 14, she comes over sometimes, and can get my sd to do more "homework" wise (or practicing) then I can...
Then again a parents instincts are usually right on... So I dont really know what to tell you! Good luck

I'm torn too - but sometimes with teenagers - the younger ones think they are REALLY cool and it *might* work out better than you would think.
A little clarification would have been nice - all around tutoring or a specific subject? Hopefully she'll call you soon and give you the rest of the details!

Oh I agree the school failed there! You definately have to know which subject to tackle... Also I think they should of sent a suggested list of tutors, shouldnt of they?
Sounds like they left you hanging here a bit...

I wish I could find a "tutoring by teenager" program. Especially if this is supervised by the school it sounds like a good idea!! I think you should give it a chance.

We have teen-agers from the local High Schools that tutor elementary kids. They get some kind of credit for it and the little ones think the older ones are cool like eaccae said.Might be worth a shot.

Actually, I think it might be worth a shot too, as they said already, the little guys look up to the "BIG GUYS" so they might be more apt to understand, AND the tutors might be able to teach them coping mechanisms that either you or the teacher haven't thought about. It might be skin of the teeth sounding, but once they memorize some facts, they can get it.

I agree it might work out well. But I also agree the teacher/school should have been more specific. Was this a general notice that was sent to all letting them know this type of tutoring was available, or was it specifically for your son's needs? We had a similar situation a year ago; school sent notice home that ds needed to attend summer school. As he had better-than-passing grades in all subjects, we were confused. When we called the school, we were told all kids with 504s were recommended for summer school. I balked at that. Summer school was not free, and ds had a rough year (we had moved late in the school year), so I ignored the notice. He did really well the following year, despite not having attended summer school! ;D Look into it further. kris
