The school called today. The first day of school!! My sweet little "fireboy" was out of control. The special ed teacher says he cannot go back to his regular class because he is soooo disruptive. She wants to do a "modified" school day for him. He would spend the morning in her room for math and language arts, and have recess at the regular time. Then music, PE, library, computer lab and lunch. Then be dismissed early, at 12:50 PM. The other students get out at 2:10 PM (school starts at 7:50 AM).
The other students would include his twin brother so he is fit to be tied. His brother will get to ride the bus home. This is something he has never done. I must say, I agree that the full day is too much for him. Not to mention what the teacher must be going through with him being unmedicated! Once he starts his new meds on the 16th we will see if this can change.
I didn't think he would last long but never realized the first day of school would be the day it all hit the fan.

(((((((((((hugs Ohmama and Fireboy)))))))))))))
I would seriously look into the modified schedule. Because Mikey is so bouncy and "full of life" we were going to modify his Kindergarten year....but the AP told the teacher to get a life and deal with him ;D He wasn't bad, just HYPER.
How do you think it would affect fireboy?

{{{{{ohmama and fireboy}}}}}
I'm curious how a modified day would affect him and his education? Would they be sending home more than usual amount of homework? Would they be expecting you to teach him what he has missed? Do you have the time (and energy) if they do expect that?
If this modification is an for an extended period of time (after your Dr's appt) maybe you can check into a tutor (if needed). This could be something the school would have to provide?
A modified day could be the best thing for fireboy and I'm hoping it is. Sending you hugs!

Im sorry! As you probably have seen, we didnt have a real bang up first day either, (no calls yet, but not sure if it is because we requested the teacher document it) and it was only a HALF DAY! Topped off with an "slight" altercation on the bus ride home even! GRRRR... I am leary of your school suggesting such a radical change after only one day, that really seems extreme to me... I dont know the specifics of his out of control behavior though for sure, to gage if I think they are going to the extreme... I think aimee raised some good questions, obviously the no child left behind act, is probably going to make someone pick up the schools slack for the 2 hours a day he will miss... Im sorry I also forget your son's age, and grade also... As you also may have read we are attempting school without medication... It really is making it difficult for me to "get after" sd, or ground her for something that with the medication I know wouldnt be an issue... Its putting me in a bit of a predictament to say the least... I am right there with you! I dont think sd will last long, but I certainly didnt expect phone calls within 2 hours of school starting! Best of luck, and you certainly are not alone, I just wish I could help more!! cat

I think the modified school day is a good idea for now. At least till he can get on something that will stabilize him.
Aimee, That was also my concern. There's not much going on during the first week of school so he won't be missing anything being out of the regular class. The special ed teacher is in constant touch with me and says he can have an aid during some of the time when he will start to go back to regular class. Hopefully we will be able to judge when he is ready for this by his ability to control himself. She said he was better today. I think it was because he was in a very small class setting (special ed room) and sometimes it was just him and the teacher. Once he gets around a lot of noise and movement the anxiety comes out in full force. He just can't handle it, not to mention neither can the teacher.
Catseye, Fireboy is 10 and in 5th grade. I hope things stabilize for you too. This is awful. I would hate to be a teacher!
Thanks everyone for all the hugs, I really needed them today. I'm living for the 16th. This new psych better be good!

I'm sorry, but to me it sounds like they are passing the buck! I think that they should have to make previsions for your son at school. On meds are not! If need be they need to get another aide or teacher for him. they obviously know that he is a handful! You, do realize that the state allows money to your school district for children with special needs, and surely they see that he requires extra help! I don't think that they should be allowed to just dismiss him like that! On the other hand I am a mother, and realize that for you, I am sure that if you know your son is in a stressful situation want him out of it as quick as possible! So, I do see where you are comming from! My heart goes out to you!!

Angel, I know what you mean and you're right that it is possible that is what their motivation is for having the modified school day. The other provision I was told is that they could place him in a self contained class room. I visited one of these last year and was not at all impressed with that whole scene. The slow pace would never work for fireboy.
It seems at this time the best thing to do is to have the shortened day to make it the best for him. Less stress for him is what is best. I don't mind that the teachers are getting off a little easy for now. I can always stir it up later if this doesn't work out.
I am hopeful that with a new antiseizure med he will be able to stabilize and fit in better this year.
