After requesting one since 1st grade - we finally have a 504!!! Of course I have a middle ear infection and feel like I am underwater and in outerspace at the same time - so I was kind of out of it! But the meeting went well.
Actually - this year he has a great teacher and a highly organized teacher - so a lot of my concerns are being addressed without the 504. But we have extra time for the CMTs and a bubbler, extra time for writing assignments in class if needed - that kind of thing. We didn't put down the initialing for writing down homework because the teacher automatically does it and wants to try weaning him off it later in the year on her own. They feel that if he still needs it for the middle school - we can put it in for next year. (But unlike last year - I trust this teacher to follow through). They also mentioned that he has great spelling on tests but it doesn't transition to his written work (setting it up for future years when spelling would count, et cetera) and that his writing problems do NOT come from poor motor skills (hmmm, haven't I been saying this for two years now? At least they recognize it and it is on paper!!!)
Hestill has some informal accomodations - for example - he can use the HWT paper if he requests it. But the teacher showed me his writing prompt from this morning - wow - it was legible - there was proper spacing . . . looks like the writing is carrying over to the regular paper!! And his writing actually made sense!!! They usually have writing first thing in the morning (he has always had it in the afternoons). I am wondering if this has an impact. His teacher is going to keep an eye out (they have writing this afternoon, for example, due to a scheduling conflict). I know that his meds keep him super focused in the morning and they don't really give him enough towards the afternoon . . .
Anyway - hopefully I didn't miss anything with unbalanced ear thing going on!!
