I don't really know if this is the right place to put this but here goes. My son, 7, has, in addition to ADHD, very mild aspergers. One of the traits of AS that is pretty apparent in him is his focus on a particular interest. It has varied and actually can teach us quite a lot about a particular subject. I'm sort of stumped by his latest interest: Pokemon. Is it a game or a video or a game or what? I know there are trading cards but are they an off-shoot of another game or are they videos and off-shoot of the cards? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

I think Pokemon started as a cartoon and then became a trading card game. That's about the extent of my knowledge. Maybe this site can provide more: www.pokemon.com/Good luck!

There are Pokemon cartoons, trading cards, video games, you name it. Have you ever heard of Pikachu? He's a Pokemon. Dragonball Z, or Yu-Gi-Oh? It's along the same lines. They are all Japanese creations of cartoons. They are a little violent, actually, but not too bad(IMO). The different Pokemon "battle" each other. They each have their own unique "powers" and they change (or morph) from cute little creatures into more serious monsters. Pokemon is a phase I am glad that we have passed. I didn't entirely approve of the whole concept, but in reality it wasn't that big of a deal. The trading cards are outlandishly expensive, and he kept giving them away to friends (because Tyler didn't have Charazard (sp?)!) and then expecting me to buy more everywhere we went! Kids around here went Pokemon CRAZY for a while, but either we've grown out of it or the fad has passed, thank goodness!

I know pokemon from the trading cards, gameboy game and the videos/films that came from that. It originated in Japan and is about a 10 year old boy called Ash who goes around finding "pokemon" who are all various creatures with different "ratings" on them. Your pokemon can then do "battle" with other pokemon and if you win you end up owning them ...
My son is now 15 and his pokemon days are behind him ... but when he was around 11 he was hook, line and sinker into pokemon!! .... (in fact at that time it was a real national craze with card trades taking place in the playground, Pokemon fairs taking place around the country etc.etc...) ... Pokemon is 'clean' and can be 'good fun'. The gameboy game kept my son busy for many hours .... the videos and films are fun and totally inoffensive....
But if your son gets into pokemon you had better stay one step ahead and start learning about what all these different 'creatures' are capable of ;D .... oh and they "evolve" into different creatures too just to keep you on your toes!!!
GOOD LUCK!! ;D

A friend of mine used to make deals with her son for reading - they were really into the pokemon trading card game - so if they did a certain amount of reading a week they would get their new pack of pokemon cards. Last year it was YuGiOh and this year it is Beyblades. (Believe it or not my nephew in Belgium is totally into Beyblades - isn't it funny how far spread out these things are?) Our school doesn't allow the trading cards but he still has a ton of both pokemon and YuGiOh cards. DS loves the cartoon and the gameboy game. (I am embarassed to say that I have been addicted to the gameboy game as well )

Thank you everyone for your help. I'm playing catch-up now with this. Fortunately, my son's pretty forgiving of my not remembering different creature's names. Right now he doesn't know about the cards; he just watches the cartoons. I hope to keep a lid on the card collecting, if I can help it (of course I pretty much just jinxed myself).

Around these parts, Pokemon is the past. My 13 add son still loves the cartoon, but his interest is Yu-Gi-Oh cards. This time around, he actually plays the game and just not interested in trading unless it is to help with the game. He just entered a tournament with about 50 kids and made it to the finals.

My 12 yr old adhd daughter is a pokemon/Yugi oh Fanatic. She doesnt play the game often but collects the cards, I was hoping it was a passing interest but she is still going strong after 3 + years. She has now taken to drawing her own Anime style cartoons and is actually quite good at it. I find it a harmless pursuit for her, At her age, there is alot worse things she could be interested in:)

My dd12 did the Pokemon thing, now it's "Full House" on Nickelodeon every night at 9. I like Pikachu...I did that for several Halloweens. Last year I had a little kid in a Pikachu suit follow me around all evening, I guess he thought I was the real thing or something.
