Yes, we have them starting in first grade, although the first grade one is much simplified. We are to sign them nightly when homework is completed.
With DS, someone checks it at the end of each day to ensure that he's copied everything down correctly and also that he has all the necessary takehome materials (a big thing; what's the use in knowing what you have to do if you leave all the books at school?). This is in his 504 plan, so they HAVE to do it.
There are spaces in Ds' agenda for teacher and parent notes, and it's a big help. I tried to get one of these from an educational store, but they only sell them in bulk.

My son just got his first planner because they start in 2nd grade here. However, he's been insisting since school started last week that he didn't have any such thing--or a composition book for spelling either.
I went back to his classroom with him after school yesterday so we could look together. The teacher showed us how it worked. He was writing down the assigments but didn't realize it needed to come home. Of course, she had already written in "Incomplete Homework" twice after only 5 school days. Not a good start, but now he understands and the planner will be important.
I wonder how long it would have taken her to notify me if I hadn't asked myself.

My son is in 4th grade and just got one of those planners. He had one is second grade and it worked great when he wrote the complete instructions for his homework(that didn't happen often..LOL) and so far this year he hasn't written anything in it, but school just started last week and it was only in session for 3 days since the last two days were jewish holidays.
I hope he is better at writing in it now than he was in 2nd grade...

Joshua,
We FINALLY got a 504 for DS this year - we were going to have it written in that the teacher had to sign the planner each day to make sure DS wrote the homework down - luckily this teacher signs all of the kids planners and has all the parents initial them when the homework is finished. She starts to "ween" them off of that midyear to see how they do independently and will evaluate what she needs to do for the kids after that. I wonder if you spoke to Gabriel's teacher - if she would be willing to initial it every day for a few months - with the hope that if he gets in the routine he will end up doing it on his own . . . just a thought. It is definitely working for us - this year is the first time Alexander has EVER written his homework assignments down!!! ;D ;D ;D

My ADHD daughter has had a planner since first grade but it is a real struggle to get her to write everything or sometimes anything in it. It has been a little better since she started Middle school becuase her school requires she have it with her all the time. Now if I can just get her to write everything in it, we might get somewhere. Does anyone else have trouble with their child saying they don't have enough time to write the assignments down?

1kaitsmom, welcome to the party My daughter, in 4th grade doesn't complain about not enough time, but she forgets her books half the time ::)so then she goes back and can double check what they have. My son, I still want one for him , has a weekly chart they just started this week, which doesn't do any good when he doesn't bring it home >:(Jeez I work at the school and he doesn't remember it until after we get home Welcome again, look around, ask away if you have any questions. One nice thing in our kids' school is that ALL the kids have to write the assignments in their planners. I don't think the teachers check them all before take home, like my ds' does, but they do have them. The teacher, thank goodness, is adding to ds' writing so that we at home understand (his writing can be a bit cryptic, even in 4th grade). When we ask him about something, he usually says, "I don't know."
The BEST thing, though, is that his teacher has a website for homework assignments, so even though he may not have his agenda completed, we can check the e-board. She is one of a very few teachers who takes advantage of the technology, although it's available to all the teachers at the school (and, in fact, in the district). I think the middle and high schools use it more.

We have a web site for the school, but it is up to the teacher if they want to put anything on it. I don't know if either of my kids teachers have personal pages made up, although it is available I would love it if they did, for both of their sakes

Same thing here - only 3 of the teachers actually use the website which is a real shame. (It is great for the students - but it is also great for the parents. Being add and disorganized myself - it can be a challenge to actually receive, keep track of, fill out and remember to send in the field trip form and check by the right date!!;D) BUT - the 5/6 school and the middle school teachers use it everyday -(that helps my worrying about next year out quite a bit)!

Cami's school has the website postings of homework, and all of her teachers are very good about updating it weekly. I have to say it is a Godsend, because she knows I check it every monday and write down the week's homework assignments, so she cn never get away with lieing and saying she doesn't have any when she does.

Tara's teacher last year had a Monday note that gave us a briefing on the week to come with all of the homework listed for the week, plus some side notes, like what might need work on or reminders for the week and such.
That was wonderful.
