Do all these kids get student planners now? Alexander is in 4th grade now and they have these great student planners. Where were these when we were kids? I remember having to buy those little spiral note pads - like 3x5 with the spiral at the top. I hated those things - and I never ended up writing my homework down. These things are great - how long do they get them for?

If I really wanted to, I could still hunt one down for free most likely.

My DS is now in 5th and he has had one every year since 2nd grade. DD now in 2nd hasn't had them yet. They are pretty neat. Helps you to keep up with the homework and what is going on in class.

I wish we had started them in 2nd - and last year in 3rd it would have been soooo helpful!!!! All I wanted was for the teacher to initial his homework. And on his planner there is a place for the teacher to do this (and his 4th grade teacher does it for all the kids). There is a place for me to initial (all the parents have to initial too). There is a place for teacher comments and parent comments - wow - how much easier would that have been instead of sending the separate parent/teacher communication log home every Friday (well in reality once a month and it maybe got read a couple of weeks after it was sent in . . . ) - not to mention that the paper they were writing their homework assignments on - well in my case the paper they were SUPPOSED to be writing their homework assignments on - barely had enough room for 2nd/3rd grade writing. Of course - ours just got lost in the mass of other papers not in Alexanders folder !! These things are great! I had no idea the schools did that. Wow - I'm old!!!

I wanted to have one of these written into his 504, but they said it wasn't nesessary ::)Yeah, we'll see how the first month goes, and if it is needed, he will have it written in They are great....even in SACC, we have had to ask the kids to see their agenda, as we call them. Oh LOOK YOU REALLY DID HAVE HOMEWORK I know they are very helpful especially with our kids, although some that I have seen have so much other garbage, like stupid advertisments

my boys have been using planners for about 6 yrs now. They are nice because they have to write down their homework and I have to sign it everynight. If the don't get it signed for 3 nights in a row the child has to call their parent from school and explain to them that they have not had their planner signed. I sign my kids everynight----It is part of the homework schedule. Also my kids have to have their planner with them at all times while at school---go to the RR, have your planner--locker, same thing---this is because a few years ago our school district had a bad incident of bomb threats and our kids have to be accounted for in every building--kinda goes with the lock down procedure(which I decided then that my kids were going to take a cell phone with them wether the school liked it or not--I want to know when my child is in lockdown and why!!) But anyways back to the planners---they are a great idea--and our school supplies the students with a new one every year--if you lose it you buy another one yourself.

My kids were given them all thru middle school, 5-8. It stopped in HS but they were so used to them, we continue to buy them. It works great for my adhd'er and her sister. We buy them at Staples, they have some usefull info- without the ads!

They are provided them here too. Problem is, they rely solely on the child to complete it, and mine rarely does!! That requires the dreaded task of writing afterall.

The nice thing about our students having to write it down is that all the teachers have a big whiteboard of the page from their planner--- all the 7th grade teachers have the same thing wroted down on the whiteboard so the students have sometime in every class to write down what the teachers have on the board. Of course Levi tries his best to get out of writing it down---he will write just a few words---well dear old mom makes him write it out Once again I am the meanie hehe---

Cheryl - that's what they have in 4th - a big white board exactly like their planner. I love it! Especially since the teacher makes sure each one of them is writing it down and making sure as parents we have our kids check off the homework - and I think by making us sign it each night makes them accountable for their homework! The arguments aren't as bad as last year because all I have to say is that I have to sign off on his homework and the next then you know - he's got it done!! ;D ;D
I hope they continue with the white board thing for as long as they have with you!! I am thinking we are just starting it because they must do this at the 5/6 school next year - and I am hoping it at least carries over to the middle school. (And I REALLY hope that the teachers are still interactive with it next year!!) But even this year - making them accountable and making them both write it down and check it off when it is finished - it is a good routine to get started!!
I am sooo jealous that these weren't around when I was in school!!

When mine were younger, the planners that were purchased never had enough room for the assignments thanks to poor handwriting. I just gave my boys a marble front notebook, labeled each page with ONE day, and let that be their planner. One thing that also helps - tear off the corner of days that are past so the kids can turn to the right page quickly.

Great tip, Kayla Fay!! Luckily these planners are still pretty big. They have one page for each day and then each day has a nice big space for different subjects (guess they are getting them ready to write in the different subject areas for next year . . eeeek). But even dysgraphic Alexander is able to write in it (it's funny there is now three times more space for him to write in his planner this year than there was in that ridiculous weekly worksheet thing they have been sending home for the past two years)!!!
I am gong to have him start cutting off the corneres when he finishes his homework - that is another incentive for scissor loving child!!

That's a good idea.....or dog ear it so you don't have to worry about the paper mess. I think last year one of the 4th grade teacher's had their kids do that. It was a good idea too

The elementary and middle school planners are the size of a regular notebook but in the highschool there's are smaller. Riley tells me that I don't have to sign his planner because the teachers don't check it like they did in middle school--WRONG--once again mean ole mom wants to check----I just want to make sure all homework is getting done. He is on a block schedule this year and now he has plenty of time to get his homework done but I still want to know what is going on--I figure that is still why they still get a planner.
