Today was "enrolment day" for Sam at college ... the main course starts next Wednesday but he was due to "enrol" today.
He woke up this morning and basically said "I don't want to go, I don't want to do that course and I am not going" ... and no amount of anger/cajoling/persuasion on my part did any good whatsoever! ... I was horrified!! ...
Anyway I went to work (at the same college!) very upset ... I decided to give him a "loop hole" and I told a little white lie ... I said he was ill !! ...
Sam then called me saying "I am soooo sorry ... oh have I messed it up?" ... I told him that I wasn't sure but would check it out ... (Make him suffer I thought !!)
As it turned out (and in fact I secretly knew anyway) he DOES get another chance .. tomorrow ... I waited until much later and then let him know that he has ONE MORE chance to enrol and that is tomorrow ... but if he misses that it is end of story!
Speaking to him later it seems he is really scared! ... He doesn't know anyone (yet) doing the same course ... it is a real fear of the unfamiliar and a class of strangers! ... I told him that all those other kids were "friends just waiting to be made" ... (hopefully!!)
He is very contrite now ... he says he wishes he had gone today ... I have no doubt that he will go tomorrow ... I just HOPE he settles in quickly and makes some friends ... Then his "first day nerves" can be put behind him !! ... Fingers firmly crossed!!

I'll cross mine for you too Anne. New things are always frightening... esp. for our kids!

Thanks Christy! ... Do you know I had almost forgotton how daunting it is for our kids to start something new like that? Sam has been at the same school for years with the same friends etc.etc. He recently started his part-time job which was new BUTTTTT he had a couple of friends already working there .... so really that was different! ... the security blanket was still there!

Anne, did he get there to enroll yet? Good luck, I hate doing strange things-(alright, not strange, but new ), but the more afraid I am, the better it seems to have been, at least in my experience anyhow

Well it went "fine" !! ... He had a "really good day" ... he actually knew HEAPS of other kids there (although not on his exact course) ... so he wasn't sitting alone at lunch!! ;D
He seems to feel much better now that he has actually BEEN there and got a feel for it ... and found that it was nowhere near as daunting as he was convinced it was going to be!
PHEW !! ;D ;D
