Ok.
At work.
In break room, watching the Olympics.
Guy asks me where Athens is.
Duh, Greece. And if you ask me where that is, I'm going to smack you.
Ummm...ok. Can you just tell me what continent it's on then?
See Alla smack forehead. See Alla use tremendous restraint, as exemplified by the fact that he is still alive.
How do people manage to make it through high school without knowing these things?
This is almost as bad as when the news decided to ask people at our school random questions and the students couldn't tell them what 10% of 100 was without using a calculator.
*sigh*

;D ;D Oh boy !! Alla you DID use constraint!! ;D ;D Your note did make me giggle though ... ! I have to admit that I had a real come-down yesterday !! ... a real 'put me in my place' thing happened... I work for a college and I decided to do the "Assessment tests" which are taken by every single student coming into the college. I decided to start with the numeracy test ... I thought "Oh this will be easy ... I will score fine on this" ... and it started and it WAS easy ... but it got harder, and harder and harder ... and I couldn't remember how I was meant to work out those questions!! ... I was horrified!! I scored the equivalent of a D grade for a 16 year old!! ... HOW MORTIFYINGLY EMBARRASSING!! ... I did a lot better on the literacy ... but I am still cringing from my numeracy result!! ... Heck!! School was too long ago I think!! ..

;D ;D THANKS Linda!! ... and who needs to be a genius at maths anyway ? ha ha ... (easy to say for someone who obviously ISN'T !! ... ;D ;D) PS .. Sam did the same tests recently and did better .. he scored an A-C for a 16 year old ... which is quite acceptable ... but as for his mother!! (and I thought I would be better than him!!) ;D ;D Hey!! ... and at least I know where Athens is .. and in which country AND on what continent unlike in Alla's story!! ;D ;D

By the way - just out of interest (well I found it interesting .... or maybe consoling !! ;D) one thing I was told at work (re Assessment tests) is that generally speaking people will always come out much better on one or other of literacy (english) or numeracy (maths) .... it is extremely RARE to find someone who is equally good at both (does happen but is RARE) ... People generally always swing significantly towards one or the other ....

No not screwy Alla !! ... According to what I was told (and I am NOT saying it is correct!) .... you are rare!! ... (and smart!! ) Apparently out of around 1000 students a year we only see this about 5% of the time .... the other 95% sway significantl one way or the other ... ! ... so IFFFF this is correct then give yourself a pat on the back !! ;D

Yeah. You wanna know what Mom's first comment was?
"Just think what you could have done if you'd studied!"
Right, Mom. Uh huh.

HA HA !! ... I have a feeling that is EXACTLY what I am going to say to Sam tomorrow when his major exam results come out (tomorrow is the day they come out all over the UK) ... UGH!! ... But whatever the results are I am quite SURE I will say something to that effect!! ... "Well done Sam (will say that regardless of results!) ... but wow!! Imagine how well you would have done if you had actually studied!" ... ;D Guess I shouldn't say it ... but he really, really DIDN'T study!! ...

I was taking calculus. I consider that enough studying.
