Steven's middle school put a supply list on it's web site that had a 2 inch binder on it so I bought him a rather expensive cloth binder. Yesterday he got a revised list that says he has to have a plastic binder. I sent the teacher an email asking about this and she said that the list was the 'team list' and that the team wanted plastic binders because they last longer. Yeah, right. So now that the stores don't have many binders left, we have to go out looking for them before friday. ARGH

Those two inch binders are expensive - even the plastic ones. I have to get several more, because more than one boy needs them in more than one class. GRRR. I've already spent well over $300 in supplies - and I'm still buying???

Marja, some of the teacher's don't require that you get things, while others.....in the older grades want to have everything "just so" to help organize. Some even specify colors, so if you can find a certain color >:(something will be flying.
What gets me is if they require it for class, I would think that they should supply it, they aren't in College for pete's sake. Oh , Kayla's are in HS, I can see HS requireing, but not grade or middle schools

Call me a meanie but I had this happen one year. They sent a list home saying they needed 2" binder, that's all. It did not mention a specific type, just that it was 2 inches. I bought one. A week or so later, I get another note from a teacher saying the kind I got was wrong, they need this kind. I send back the note the next day with the explanation that the first note did not state that, that i had already spent money on the one she had and wasn't planning on spending more. A 2" binder is a 2" binder and the one she had would work just as good as the one they wanted. If that wasn't good enough, then the school could provide it. I never heard anything more about it!

In junior high, they wanted us to have a separate 1" binder for each class. After me grabbing the wrong one for the umpteenth time, they finally allowed me to carry one 3" or 4" binder with everything in it. It lived in my backpack. If we were having a notebook check, they would either check mine in class or announce it the day before so I knew to grab an empty 1" out of my locker. One of the teachers even kept a few empty 1" binders in his room so that I could just grab one from the shelf and stick my stuff in it without having to run back to my locker.

Notebook checks are the most horrible thing for an ADHD kid. I can't even begin to tell you. They almost always lower the nine week's grade by one letter. "But they have to learn to be organized." No they don't - when they are older they can hire a secretary. Thankfully, this year we have VERY understanding teachers who have offered assistance and lowered standards. I wish I could homeschool, but I promise, I'm not cut out for it. I'm just not.
