Yep - You sound just like my kids. I think what you are both proving is that I'm old fashioned! Allanque is right, though. It's important to get exactly the same calculator as the school. The TI-83 is now passe, as the TI-84 has been released, but our school is still asking parents to get the TI-83. Actually, most of the TIs work close enough that you can take a different model. At least the TI-86 and the TI-83 are. The TI-86 will run programs from a TI-83, so it's mostly the same.

My son's high school still encourages the use of TI 83s because, at this time, the SAT hasn't approved of the use of TI 84's. Here's what the TI web site says: "Will the TI-84 Plus family of products be allowed on the same exams as the TI-83 Plus family? We have every reason to believe that the TI-84 Plus will be allowed on the same exams where TI-83 Plus products are currently allowed. At this point, we are still working with testing agencies to ensure this is the case. Please check the web site for the particular test you will be taking for the latest list of technology allowed. Hello there!
Okay, according to my son's Pre-Calc teacher, the TI84 IS okay to use on the SAT. (Although nothing official is posted on the web site.)
As there doesn't seem to be much difference in the TI83 vs the TI84 it's not like I'm going to be running out to Staples to buy the new calculator! Although my son DOES use the TI83 to do his homework (this is the NON-ADHD son) he also uses it to play pong, etc. Of course, the classroom teachers can always tell when students are playing games on their calculators; when you use both hands you are NOT doing math!

Just an FYI - Office Depot has the TI-83Plus on sale for 79.49 after a $10 mail-in rebate here.
