One of my boys is passionate about history. In the 9th grade at our school, there are three World History teachers. The teachers of the 'regular' classes are coaches, and they are passionate about basketball, football. One of them passes out worksheets at the beginning of class and calls it a day. (I'm not out to change the system, but this one is tempting...) The other teacher is wonderful, but only teaches the Honors classes.
And you'll just have to believe me when I tell you this son isn't YET honors material. I want him to get a good grounding in history, however, so that he will be able to use the facts he learns now when his higher order thinking skills kick in.
So, today I go to the school, prepared to have him skip history altogether this year, to have the Honors teacher alter curriculum for one student, or whatever. But first I asked if there was another solution. AND --- they put him in a US history class with the best history teacher I know! I'm so excited. He's in the class with mostly 11th graders, but the teacher assured me he'd have no problems. And maybe, by the time he's in 11th grade and has to take World History, he'll have matured enough academically to handle an Honors class.
Or maybe someone will have reformed those coaches! LOL
PS This isn't to knock coaches in general. Two of the best teachers we've ever had were coaches.

Great news Kayla! I kn ow what you mean about the grounding in history. My husband didn't have a great base of teachers for history, so now he watches the history channel learning everything I did in HS Yeah, we have books and magazines on WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, yup, just sitting there waiting for him to read them. But he does get around to it. You know what a great game for the boys might be, Axis and Allies. It is a very good strategy game. My husband used to play it all the time with his friends, and I started to play, but we need to get our own game, as the friend doesn' tstop by anymore Congrats!!!!! And coaches aren't bad as teachers as long as they don't pass the kids who play their sport just because

Just an update. On Tuesday, my son asked me whether I thought Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton had the best position on the interpretation of the Constitution. When I confessed my ignorance, he gave me a five minute discourse, comparing and contrasting the two.
This teacher is an ADHD child's dream - they do skits, games, projects, drawings - and they all LEARN. She has them so involved, so captivated that they can't help it. She is quite familiar with all the learning styles and multiple intelligences, and her teaching touches all types.
And she's (gulp) only 24. She looks like she's about 14.
But I'm SO pleased.

LOL Today they did a skit about the British burning down the White House during the war of 1812. (Did you know it wasn't white until after the fire?) He wore his Beckom soccer shirt with "England" on the front. He bought it in London, and I could kick myself for not picking up another for his little brother!

Hey!! I didn't know the British burned down the White House!! What a horrible thing to do !! Why did they do that?? (Nothing to do with me by the way - it was way before my time LOL!)
As for the Beckham shirt ... (as you know David Beckham is a huge national hero!!) ... if you want another one let me know the size and I'll get it & send it to you! ...

Oh, my kids know about Beckam! You can BRING me a jersey! About the fire - back then all armies burned everything. We weren't an exception - remember in Gone With the Wind that the Union Army burned Atanta? One of the most memorable events of the 1812 fire was that the President's wife Dolly Madison saved an important portrait of George Washington from the fire. You can read the White House story here: www.whitehousehistory.org/04/subs/04_b_1812.html. It is written from a decidedly American point of view, of course! (Can you tell who else is passionate about history?!)

YAY! I almost gave all my leftover Pounds Sterling to my husband's BIL. I'm glad I didn't!
It's for the youngest boy.
