How does your child's school grading system work? Ds is "A,B,C,D,F" no minus or plus( ie: C+, B-). We moved here in Jan so he didn't get a report card then, but his 3rd qtr one was ok. Then a couple weeks ago he came home w/ a progress report and some of grades went down an "A" to a "B" and 2"B's" to "C's". We were a little upset. Last night we were talking about grades and that's when he told me his school doesn't do "-" and "+". SO I really don't know what the "real grades" are for the "B" and "C" there's two other possible grades in there that he might have if they used the regular system. I guess it works for the kids that struggle(like mine, although this time it didn't help) because all they need is that certain point and they get catapulted to the next grade. But what about the kids that get "A's" all the time if they get a couple things wrong it normallly would be "A-" or B+" but it goes right down the a "B" their report card and self eseteem can get tarnished. I hope the catholic school ds goes to next year doesn't grade like this

I dont think I would like that either... So far sd is only in first grade, and it is strictly number (1,2,3, no plus or minus's)... I assume some year we will get to that a,b,c, and I hope they use the plus, and minus's...

Our school system's grade scale for elementary and middle is as follows:
90-100 = A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D anything below 60 = F

Ours is the same as Camismom. We've never had the +/- thing, so it's never been an issue. He is in first grade. Pre-K - Kindegarten uses the E, S+,S, S-, and N (needs attention). I guess we did use the +/- before, but they dropped it once he moved to first grade and started getting letter grades. However, they always put the percentage number beside the letter grade, so I consider an 89 to be a B+.

Ours(in NC) is:
93-100 = A etc.
Which makes it tough to get an A! I grew up with the same scale as camismom. In my mind, an A is 90-100 and always will be!

From fourth grade on up you are on a letter grading scale similiar to swmom 92-100 is considered an A and so on.
What gets me is the grading system for 3rd and under. We get A/C, area of concern, checks, pluses, minuses, check pluses, and check minuses. Sometimes I get pretty aggravated with DD's report card. It's just so hard to understand if she is on the level she needs to be with checks and stuff. Who came up with these crazy grading scales anyway??
Two more days, two more days, two more days!!

i kinda liked the system I had when I taught first grade. It was an anecdotal report card. It was a handwritten summary of how they were doing in each area. Now granted I didn't have that many students but I think that gives a better idea .. but I suppose that is what teacher conferences are about..
Now with the virtual acadamy it's a mastery system. If they do not get 80% or higher on each lesson evaluation you redo it. Most of the time they get 100%.. and the kids get to see that after each lesson! It's a nice boost. But there are still areas of concern.. we really need to work on the handwriting and there is no scale for effort.. which would be pretty low right now!

They've changed the grading system in our district enough times that my sister gets four different report cards for her four kids none of which can be compared with each other. Of course, that can be a good thing with sibling rivalry.
They stopped pluses and minuses years ago, so only one child has them.
I've complained here once before about this year's report cards based on Pennsylvania assessment test categories--BB=below basic, B=basic, P=proficient, A=advanced.
My gripe has been that the range for P is 79-99/100. To get an A, a child needs 100--a perfect score on absolutely everything. The district finally agreed the A range is a problem and is changing it next year to P=79-92 and A=93-100. So we'll have one more report card with almost all P's and, if he keeps on track next year, we'll get to look at straight A's.

I just don't get it, what was wrong w/ the way it was. S+, S, S- etc.. for elementary and A,A-,B+,B,B- etc.. for middle and high school. It worked well enough when I went to school.

I am with you aimee30. We use the same system. I still have to wonder what the real grades could be without all the checks and such. What happened to old fashioned grades.? UGH! Oh well, school is out!!! Have a fun summer everyone and safe! Christina ;D
