We had Eric's IEP last week.. First they didn't wnat to listen to anything.. I brought an official diagnosis from his Psych doc. It says he is not only ADHD but Mild Autistic as well. They just sat there and smiled and said "This does not change anything for him educationally and we will not alter this IEP just so you can add more to our plate here." I wanted to scream... Eric just sits there in class and picks at his hands. he gets overwhelmed with writing and thinking and needs an Aide acoording to the Psych. Doc, to keep him on track.. I don't know how to get them to change the IEP without giving official notice to them, which will really make them mad.
It has been suggested I push for him to go to a school within the district that has more services for him, with a program that suits him better. A freind with Autistic kids thought this would be good..
Sorry for the vent.. I don't like these people. Tehy don't care about Eric at all. They are tired of me constantly calling to talk to them about this stuff they said.

Christina...Don't worry about making them mad..advocate for your child and do it hard!! Go to the school board if you have to. Eric is entitled to a free and appropriate education and they know it!

Christina... of course the school doesn't want to give you more services... it will cost them time, money, and energy. BUT THAT IS WHAT THEY LEGALLY HAVE TO DO. When they change the subject at an IEP meeting, you have to say "that's nice but we are here to discuss and plan Eric's education. His current level is ... and his needs are ... What is the school going to do for meeting his needs? His goals must be ... and he needs ... as specially designed instruction." If they don't fall into line, you need to file for mediation or due process.
It sounds overwhelming at first, but I have actually heard school district executives say that a parent that pushes for due process is actually a friend to the district because it forces them into compliance and keeps them out of hot water and having to offer free compensatory education later for a child that wasn't serviced appropriately earlier.
Don't hold back, stick to it. Be the Momma Bear and protect those cubs.

Christina  YOU GO GET THEM They´ll try everything to stop your agenda, because it´ll cost them good That´s no way to play You just stay strong and firm, you know best what your son need´s, you have to tell them too. they may try this "If you feel like this..." blaa, blaa, blaah DONT LET THEM, FIGHT BACK!!!!!!! Wonder what your locals new would say if you contacted them with this story..... "Local School District not Complying with the Needs of Special Children" Bet that would get their attention!!  Take it from someone who works for a school district... they hate negative publicity! Ours is in hot water right now! |

For that matter, write a letter to the editor of a couple papers. We have a few people around here that go back and forth and back and forth, just in writing letters at each other....almost like politians (they both used to be, I guess some arguements never die)

I havent gone throught this yet but I will have to next year because I know my kid needs this program. Stick to your guns dont let them make you feel like you need a favor from them it sounds like this is there job. Your taxes pay their salary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it turns out okay for you all. I thought the schools were supposed to care about all the children?  |

Christina They should be ashamed of themselves! You are asking them for help and they are telling you too bad?!?! I bet if it was one of their kids the tables would turn really fast. It is your call as to what school he is in, but if you don't want to switch him then don't. You are not required to send him to a special school anymore. Times have changed and he is entitled to just as much as an education as the next kid. Plus, by getting their attention now you are paving the road for your next little guy. If you let them push you around now they do it when he comes through also. Be a big old crab! You got kids I know you can do it!! Becky |

Thanks everyone, Just to let you know, I called and spoke to teh head of the Special Needs program for the District this morning. She told me to write an official letter wanting Erics file changed and an updated IEP plan. To call her if they push back because with the diagnosis I hav ethe right to ask for the aide and alll that goes with it. APparently Eric could have had an aide this whole time because he is ADHD. The school said a year ago NO! Now I am mad and swirling on the broom I borrowed from Kaiti ;D They better watch out. Have a nice day, Chrisitina |

Glad to hear someone from the school district is on your side.
I'm curious about what she said "He could have had an aide because of his ADHD", do you need to have an IEP or 504 plan for this, or just an official ADHD diagnosis? The classes in my DS school are just too big (31 kids this year), he would be just fine if he had an aide to help keep him on track.

They often refer to a website www.wrightslaw.com that they say is helpful--I've never been but thought I'd pass this on. |

Thamks friends, Laura; In our school district the IEP has to have it written in, but it is a long ordeal to get it... even thought the director said it was possible... She apparently leaves these decisions up to the brainiacs doing the IEP to decide whether this is good for the student and or the class the child is in.
