Mad, confused, and more mad!

As some of you are already aware, my daughter is trying out for cheerleading. Well, she had to have two teachers complete a "Teacher Recommendation Form" for this. Yesterday she had her Pre-Alg teacher, who is also a "friend" (more like aquaintence) of ours from church, and the one teacher she thought is really nice and would give her a good recommendation complete the form. They are to be rated on about five different things. The rating are: poor, fair, good, and excellent. Well, this teacher gave Cami a "fair" rating on all five things, and then in the comment section wrote: "Cami is a good girl, but I constantly find myself having to redirect her to pay attention and complete her work. She may do well in cheerleading though."

Now, for the part that makes me mad. I have emailed ALL of Cami's teachers several times during the year and have always asked them to notify me if they see any problems with her. I have never heard anything from her. I also see her in church at least every Sunday (she only comes then) and she never says anything. To top it off, my dh and her dh play church softball together. Just last Thursday night, I sat next to her on the bleachers at a game. I asked her at that time how Cami was doing, and her reply was "fine, just fine." No mention of this problem she felt so compelled to write on Cami's form!

This has gotten me so angry I could spit nails. Had she come to me about this, I could have seen about an adjustment in meds, I could have spoken to Cami about it. Instead, she says nothing to me, but gives her the next to lowest ranking on this form which couldl go against her chances at cheering. She even gae her a "fair" on her grades. Hello?! Cami has made nothing but A's and B's all year. How is that "fair"?! AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Teachers!! As we have said before, they just don't get it!

The teacher's comments could have been worded differently.She should have said:I feel confident that Cami will do well in cheerleading" Seems like it never ends with our kids!

I would be mad also ... I cant believe a's and b's are "fair"... argh! The demands put on kids in general (not just adhd kids) is getting way out of hand... I hope the cheerleading coach weighs in the actual grades, and not just the "fair" from the teacher... Good luck

Yeah, I'm hoping the cheerleading coach ( teacher also) will be one of the RARE exceptions to teachers now-a-days and think when she reads that, "Well, duh! The child has ADHD, of course she needs to be redirected!"

I would get mad too. theacher´s, they really are a piece of work some of them at least. A´s and B´s being "fair" doesnt seem fair at all I´d say that´s exellent or good at the minimum.

This is what I dislike about theacher´s, they say it´s fine, fine and then... all the sudden thay act like the sky has just fallen down, everything is wrong

Well, you all know me, I emailed the teacher first thing this morn. Since then I have gotten two responses. The first starting with an apology and explanation. She said she was frustrated as a whole with the class and her frustration got pinned on Cami so to speak. The class was apparently being unruly and she is having a hard time with them all paying attention and is upset that several of her students just aren't "getting" Pre-Alg and will have to take it again next year (Cam included). She said she realized what she had done was wrong later and thought about it all afternoon and evening. She said she was unfair to Cami herself, and acted uybprofessionally. She has since gone to Cami to see if she still had the form (which she did) and told her to throw it away, she would get her a new one. She also explained this all to Cami and apologized to her. She then went to the coach and asked for a new form to give Cami explaining she had messed Cami's up. So, I guess no harm done afterall. So, I'm back to just praying she'll make it!

I am glad things worked out so well. Our kids need something to lift up their self confidence. For my DS it was sports. He found out that he was good at football, basketball, and track. It also helps that inorder to play he needs to keep his grades up, so it gives him more motivation. I am thinking of your DD for todays practice. My DD will try out next year, but has been in dance and gymnastics for years now. We only pick 4 from her grade. About 24 try out each year, then the number of girls trying out dropps each year after the first time. When are the actual try outs? I need to read your other post again I guess.

Good for you! Who knows whether this teacher would have even had a second thought if you hadn't contacted her. Furthur proof that we really are our kids greatest advocate. Good luck to Cami in the try-outs.

Christy I am so glad you got this worked out with the teacher. How great for cami!! You did the right thing and you went about it in a good way. Way to go!!!
