Since when is it REQUIRED that the child MUST enter a science project into the fair? It seems unfair to me! It is apparently 3/4 of his year grade!! No kidding! He's been behind for every assignment, and is right now, at 9:57pm trying to finish it up cuz it's due tomorrow, and has only had it since December!!!!! Sigh! Maybe I'm being selfish. I just don't understand sometimes, when I was a kid, I didn't think twice about homework, and it was done. The whole required science project thing is beyond me. Now my son is proclaiming that"I'm gonna kill myself" over a stupid science project. Why does it have to be so difficult? I'm so frustrated right now, I could scream!!!

I hope everything went well for you. I remember my DS doing a science project in 4th grade. Funny thing was that my DD is 2 grades behind and did not need to do a project in 4th.

My dd was required to do a Science project last year and a Social Studies project this year to be entered in the fair. It was a must. It was a major part of the grade they made on their report card for that nine weeks. 3/4 of his yearly grade is way overboard! Too much is expected out of our kids today. I know it's too late to help with it now, but in the future, get with his teachers and let them know how overwhelmed he is. Heck do it now to let them know how overwhelmed he was on this, how he was still up and working at 10:00, and that does him no good. Children have to have sleep too, and sleep deprivation only aggravates the problem. Maybe he needs a 504 in place for the future. Teachers lump all of our kids together now a days and don't take the ones with special needs into consideration. I know some of Cami's teachers were surprised when they heard how much time she spent on homework before her 504. In their minds it should only take a short while. They don't stop to think that what may take the average child a few minutes, can take our kids a few hours. Talk to his teachers. Sometimes they surprise us and want to help.
Let us know how the project went and good luck!

I had the big science fair requirement in 6th grade, 1977. We had a math fair requirement in 4th grade too. We were allowed teams, but that makes it even harder on our kids. Definitely let the teacher know that your guy is overwhelmed. Ask for it to be graded against his ability, not being compared to the overachiever in the class. Perhaps breaking it into smaller grades with less weight per grade. One for research, one for creativity, one for timeline, one for organization... I am just throwing out suggestions (our kids are VERY creative but not at all timely or organized!). Find his strengths and point them out to the teacher, and to him as well. Let us know what his project was, if there is a time extension we will probably help him finish! Also, for extra credit, get him to log on to www.nu.com and click on the link at the top to "Eagles Online". There are a pair of Bald Eagles nesting on the Quabbin Resevoir in Central Massachusetts. There is a live web cam set up. The eaglets hatched last week, and are the cutest pair of grey fur balls right now! Maybe he can earn a few extra points by given the teacher a second mini project by researching on his own something interesting to him!

oh tridlette, I'm glad you said that...I haven't been there for a while... Sorry Eye, it is a good site though From as far as I can remember in grade school, we had to do something for science fair....Heck last year Tara had to do one in Second grade....she liked it though, so it wasn't a problem......the problem will be if Mikey has to do a project and if he is allowed to choose it or get it assigned....I guess it wouldn't matter if he liked it..... Nope, God forbid there isn't a spare second in the day that the kids can have to themselves..come on now, don't you know that would be :oChildhood nope, can't let that one happen.....need them grades..... Science projects have been required for my son since 2nd grade. Reflections (Art/Literary) projects since 1st grade. I hate it too, because he's such a big procrastinator and I feel the school could take more "responsibility" in that area. For example, I wish they'd set smaller deadlines to make sure students are not waiting until the last minute.
But, I suppose that should fall upon me and him. Or, maybe just him. You know, since parents are too involved and all that.

My DS is in 4th grade this year and had to do his first science fair project. It didn't affect his grade unless he didn't do it. I was so thankful for that. I had never done a science fair project and had no idea where to start. Luckily we made it through this one. After it was over I found a book on science fair projects and picked it up. Not sure if we have to do it again next year, but I'm prepared just in case. Hope all went well with your DS.
