Well I have posted about my ds under lots of topics. We have gone from meds to naturals to meds. We are now doing nothing. He is just going to school and we take it one day at a time. I have had some bad days here lately. I just see things changing for him right away and I think he needs some type of protection. My ds son is in a private school in Chicago I dont think they will help with this plan. We have a public school in a neighborhood that he attended for one year and I am sure they dont want to see us return but I think he needs this IEP and I think they have to help. I am going to take a class here in Chicago on Apr 17th to learn more. I wanted to know some of your experiences with the IEP I dont know if this is what he needs but I think it would sure help. Does this mean they have to give him a smaller class? Will his records be marked for years to come?

babytay, I don't know anything about IEP's, but I often visit www.schwablearning.org for answers to questions about my ds's LD. There are many posts there about IEP's and people seem to be very knowledgeable. If you go to the Community section there, you can do a search on their board, or post a question. Good luck.

I just recently got an IEP for my daughter and started with much the same questions as you did. An IEP (Individualized Education Plan) is covered by I.D.E.A (Individuals w/Disabilities in Education Act) as is a 504 ( a less powerful form of IEP, kinda) To start the ball rolling, ask for a meeting about an IEP. It is you and your childs legal right! You will fill out paperwork on your child, thhis teacher will fill out paperwork on your child, and then the school has to have a meeting that will include the childs parents, his teacher, the LD teacher, the school social worker, the school psychologist, and an asst principle. This is called the "child study team." This initial meeting will determine if there is a problem and if testing needs to be done. If they say no, then you have the right to have the testing done at your own cost and bring the results back to the team for review. If they say that testing needs to be done, then the school will (at their cost) will test your child through educational testing, pyschological testing and his teachers input on school work for a learning disability. The social worker will have questions for you as will the teacher. ADHD can be a LD. Once the results are back (and they have up to 65 days by law to accomplish all the testing) , there will be another meeting od the child study team. The results will be reviewed and if it is determined that your child has an LD then an IEP will be written. They have 30 days to do this and then a final meeting to go over it and approve it. You do not have to sign it that day, and you can have it looked over by someone with more experience in IEP's than you. At every meeting, you will get a packet explaining your rights, it is always the same packet, but they are required by law to offer it to you each time. I have chronicled my process in the thread in this section called "Brooke's IEP Timeline." Here is a link to it: Brooke's IEP TimelineI had alot of the same question you have and they are all answered there. Please, if I can be of any further assistance, don't hesitate to ask.

We had an IEP for Conner last year.. and now we have annual reviews, case conferences, ect to follow up with the initial IEP... Ladies this is the BEST THING I could have done for my Conner!! The reasons why? They tested him and confirmed what I had feared...that he had adhd, developmental delays, ect... With this information in hand, I was able to get in with a psychiatric quicker and was able to show them what the school did, testing wise, and they in turn did MORE testing and confirmed what the school had figured out... But that's a little off topic... At the IEP we decided that Conner needed to be tested for Developmental Delays and for ADHD. That testing resulted in more testing for speech therapy, hearing tests, occupational therapy, ect. Ladies I had them do ALL the testing they could just to rule out everything!!!!! THEN after all the testing was completed, we had another case conference where we went over the results... It turns out that Conner is eligable for Speech Therapy through the school system! He tested out of occupational therapy BUT... now here is the COOL part... Because he was diagnosed with Emotional Disorder (he has ADHD, but the school didn't give him that diagnosis...the psychiatrist did) the school is going to PAY for Conner to attend Preschool!!! AND they are going to provide transportation for him!! So what this means? Conner gets to go to a preschool that I approve of...the school will bus him back and forth. He will receive speech therapy and extra help to help him learn to control his emotions, AND I don't have to pay! *lol* The school does!!! (I would have paid if the school didn't provide this service, BUT by law they have to help get our children ready for real school!) AND I have a say in EVERYTHING that goes on with his schooling and testing. They retest when the children are 5 right before they enter the school system and any diagnosis that were on the child previously will be tested again, AND if they don't apply any longer (like the speech) then they don't go on their school records... Hope this helps! Anna

well this sounds to good to be true. I cant get my sons father to agree the our child needs some help. My son is having such a hard time. His dad wont give the meds I dont know what to do because sometimes the meds make his emotions worse. I know he needs this so I am going to try to make it happen. Next thing is I am worried about him being labeled as a slow child and getting teased for being LD . Do your children go to a special classroom in the school? Maybe if I get the ball rolling for this IEP it can help him get a smaller class size. I am hoping this will help him. I called the public school in my area but they said my son couldnt be tested because his grades were to high. I am going to look into this futher because my son is not working to potential he spends half his day in the hall because he cant be still.
